Nation Media Group Jobs in Nairobi, Kenya

Nation Media Group
Calling Writers
Job Description
The English language Nation Media Group publications, which include the Nations (Daily, Saturday and Sunday), The EastAfrican
and Business Daily invites applications for columnists and contributors.
These are important and privileged positions. Columnists and contributors write on subjects of their choice and are free to express their opinions.
Columnists write a regular column while contributors are published on ad hoc basis.
While the purpose of a column is to offer an opinion, NMG columnists and contributors are expected to back their opinions with information and facts. Our readers expect them to offer new ideas, insights or answers to problems.
The NMG op-ed and opinion pages are critical forums that allow our readers to engage with different viewpoints on matters relevant to
the socio-economic health of the country.
The pages are intended to extend conversations or introduce new dimensions to public discourse, and to provide views that reflect the diversity and vibrancy of public dialogue. The columnists and contributors drive these conversations.
We are particularly keen to receive non-political contributions because we want to diversify the voices and ideas in our pages by including
environment, science, health, religion (as a tool for socialization, not dogma), education, security, etc. We do not have enough of these
voices.
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with excellent writing skills, creativity, knowledge, expertise, or unique experience of a subject. The candidates must be able to communicate clearly and simply with the ordinary reader even whey are dealing with complex subjects or issues.
They must also be able to write sustainably, keeping their writing fresh and alive, always grabbing the reader’s attention. While opinion writing is not news analysis, a columnist or contributor is expected to have a clear thesis and persuasive argument supported by evidence.
NMG columnists and contributors must not only demonstrate a clear grasp of the subject that they are writing on, they must also recognize and respect contrary views.
While academic qualifications are not the overriding factors in evaluating who can and cannot be an NMG columnist or contributor, it is highly unlikely an applicant without a university degree will qualify. Those who qualify should have independently verifiable bona fides.
If you are interested, send a brief resume and cover letter, accompanied by a sample opinion of not more than 650 words, to publiceditor@ke.nationmedia.com by February 20, 2018.
Because of the large number of applications expected, we will respond only to applications that meet the minimum threshold.
