Accountant

Responsibilities

·         Preparation of all financial statements; including Management Accounts, books of account, recording each transaction in an appropriate and timely manner in an accounting system
·         Responsible for payroll and making all third party payments.
·         Responsible for advances management and ensuring that appropriate authorizations are in place and records maintained.

·         Managing the BBC’s tax profile.
·         Liaising with IBF and IBM teams for reporting and approvals.
·         Preparation and submission of monthly financial reports and bank and petty cash reconciliations.
·         Coordinating with staff on travel and other expenses and ensuring compliance with BBC policy.
·         Dealing with all payments to local and international vendors, including issuance of purchase orders, processing of invoices and fund transfers.
·         Preparation of budgets, with the IBF team in UK, and management of the IB and editorial
budgets for the Kenyan offices, advising the Bureau Editor and other managers of any potential savings or overspends
·         Supervising day to day dealings with banks for bank transfers, payroll and foreign remittances.
·         Acting as a liaison with auditors, legal advisors and tax consultants.
·         Conducting periodic audits of each office’s expenses and finance operations.
·         Assisting in Human Resources related issues including computation of payroll and salary transfers.
·         Ensuring that filing and record keeping is appropriate and compliant.

·         Implement and sustain a control environment and ensuring strong financial controls are in place. Alert the International Hub Bureau Manager, Operations Manager and IBF and/or IBM teams to any risks.
·         Overall responsibility for the efficient management of all financial issues.
·         Implementing policies and procedures in line with IBF guidelines.
·         To take individual responsibility for the promotion and implementation of the BBC Values.

Qualifications

·         Appropriate accountancy qualifications with sound knowledge of Kenya Tax laws particularly those pertaining to PAYE and withholding tax.
·         Sound book keeping experience including: working with budgets, producing timely and accurate information and reports, advising managers of cost issues.
·         Experienced in financial reporting with the ability to structure and read detailed financial data.
·         Strong planning, time management and organisational skills with the ability to work across many different projects at once
·         Ability to work unsupervised in a busy and pressurised environment.
·         Fluent spoken and written English; excellent communications skills and ability to manage remote communication effectively.
·         A good working knowledge of Kiswahili would be an advantage.
·         Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate proficiently both in written and verbal form to people of all levels.
·         Ability to work with attention to detail and accuracy
·         Good IT skills with an advanced knowledge in Excel and experience of other finance software packages.
·         Good working knowledge of BBC Health & Safety procedures
·         A lively interest in the broadcast news, online news and wider media environment and appreciation of the particular demands it may place on financial and administrative work.
·         Willing to spread best practices in BBC operations across Kenya and East Africa and to challenge, and where appropriate, report any financial irregularities to the IBF team.
