Norwegian Refugee Council
(NRC) has been present in Somalia since early 2004 and has since expanded its
Horn of Africa Programme to Kenya in 2006 and to Ethiopia in 2011.
NRC has mainly focused on
Somalis who are displaced by the ongoing conflict and more recently by the
drought and famine.
NRC offers a comprehensive
response for Refugees, returnees and IDPs of high need, addressing their food
security, livelihood, shelter, education, ICLA, and water, hygiene and
sanitation needs and also responding to emergencies through NRC’s five core
competences; Shelter, Education, Food Security and Livelihoods, WASH and
Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA).
The Youth Education and livelihoods Project is a program of the Norwegian Refugee Council with support from UNHCR, and other agencies and institutions in education.

The main objective is to
ensure that displaced youth are equipped with the necessary skills and
knowledge to enhance protection, improve their Youth Education and livelihoods
Project and become productive members of their communities.
Youth Education and
livelihoods Project is a one-year non-formal education project for refugees and
local host population in between 15 – 24 years old, which combines literacy and
Numeracy skills, life skills and skills training.
The training cycles are for
six (6) months and is full time, five days a week. The learners are
refugees/host community youth aged 14 to 24 years.

He/She will ensure the skills
development and literacy and numeracy activities run smoothly through providing
the required support to the skills instructors and literacy and numeracy
teachers on time.
To ensure proper and timely data collection and entry and compilation of reports
Job Description
- Carry out
community mobilization and awareness creation on the project activities
and register youth for training/learning.
- To prepare
comprehensive work plans that will enable the instructors and teachers
plan appropriately for the training activities.
- To ensure that
training content is delivered using learner friendly methods as per the
curriculum.
- To monitor in a
participatory manner the implementation of the training curricula and
ensure all modules are completed within the training cycle.
- To ensure that
training is thorough and trainees are able to apply the skills acquired.
- To cooperate
and support the entire team of teachers in the project.
- To distribute
training materials and other requirements on time and keep clear records
on the same.
- To submit
progress reports to the Project Officer monthly or otherwise as may be
required.
- Promote close
working relationship with other stakeholders.
- Create
awareness among refugees and the host community on the project activities
and forge cooperation with other community livelihood activities.
Qualifications
- Have at least
four years of teaching experience in Primary School, pre-primary or any
other formal or non-formal learning institution.
- Experience in
community development initiatives
- High level of
personal integrity and sensitivity to adult psychology.
- High standard
of English methodology including oral skills.
- Knowledge on
use participatory and learner centred methods, children rights and the
global education standards.
