Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT), a not-for-profit organization established in Kenya in 2009 by the Swiss-based Biovision Foundation for Ecological Development, is situated on the main campus of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Kasarani, Nairobi. 

The Trust’s goal is to alleviate poverty and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Kenya and other African countries, through dissemination of information and knowledge on appropriate technology, to improve human, animal, plant, and environmental health. 

BvAT supports the Biovision Farmer Communication Programme (FCP) and other agro-based initiatives in Africa.

BvAT is seeking to recruit a qualified person for the following vacant position:

Radio Production Assistant

Job purpose & scope:
 The Radio Production Assistant provides vital support to the radio manager and radio assistant for content development for TOF radio and associated video production activities. 

The Production Assistant will undertake field activities to collect information for producing TOF radio programs and TOF videos.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Producing scripts and conducting program research and interviews,
  • Voicing radio programs, editing audio with digital editing software, archiving past programmes.
  • Maintaining contact list and arranging and overseeing guest visits and temporary staff or freelance contributors.
  • To create and sustain synergies with TOF Magazine by offering content input.
  • To strengthen multimedia output of TOF and FCP.
Education and Knowledge:
  • Diploma in Communication or related field
  • Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication
Experience:
  • At least 2 years’ work experience in radio and associated video production activities.
Specialized Knowledge and skills required for the job
  • Interviewing, recording, and editing skills and knowledge
  • Video production skills
Personal Attributes
  • Confident person who requires minimum supervision, creative, team player, communication skills.
  • Fluency in oral and written English and Swahili.

Grants and Resource Mobilization Officer

Job Purpose & Scope:
 The officer will be responsible for supporting the Executive Director and Project Managers in donor engagement, fundraising and proposal writing, and managing fundraising projects, and mobilization of resources to support BvAT programmes.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Developing and regularly reviewing BvAT’s strategic plan and grant & resource mobilization policies and practices;
  • Identifying funding opportunities, analyzing information on their funding priorities and trends and sharing the information with the Executive Director.
  • Developing winning proposals, concept notes and grant applications, that include yearly targets to meet the costs of the current and future programmes;
  • Establishing long term funding relationships with private sector, corporate agencies, donors and reputable individuals within Kenya and abroad;  and finding a match with partners whose philanthropic or funding criteria match BvAT’s vision and activities.
  • Working with the Executive Director and Project Managers to ensure that all donor reports are prepared to quality standards in compliance with contractual obligations, maintaining a tracking system to ensure that all reporting deadlines are met.
  • Developing a fund generation and resource mobilization workplan and constantly monitoring the implementation.
  • Providing guidance to Project Managers on the status of existing sub agreements, and related policies and procedures.
  • Undertaking other relevant activities as and when assigned by the Executive Director.
Education and Knowledge:
  • At least a degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Social Sciences, Development  Studies or a related course from an accredited institution.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 3 years’ relevant working experience in fundraising or grants management involving raising of substantial long-term funding from a broad range of sources including corporate, local and international donors.
  • Experience in writing project concept notes and proposals
  • Experience in monitoring, implementation and reporting of project activities
Specialized Knowledge and skills required:
  • Relevant training in resource mobilization / fundraising
  • Proven track record in preparing and presenting winning proposals to secure long term funding from local and international sources;
  • Strategic approach: Ability to contribute to the development of BvAT’s fundraising approach with regards to the donor community and to develop fundraising tools and mechanisms, whilst ensuring that BvAT's reputation for integrity and institutional independence are upheld and enhanced.
  • Creativity and innovation: Ability to develop and adapt innovative approaches and replicable strategies for fundraising, through the analysis of trends and experience and the consideration of lessons learnt.
  • Adapting and responding to change: Ability to challenge and question common resource mobilization practices and previous approaches, to adapt to changing circumstances and needs, and to identify and prioritize valued projects.
  • Planning and organizing skills: Ability to coordinate and facilitate timely reporting of results and successes to donors and other key stakeholders.
  • Communication skills: Ability to make presentations that catch and maintain audience interest; and excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills: a) Ability to build networks and strategic alliances and maintain relationships with key donors and other partners, with tact and sensitivity, b) Ability to develop detailed knowledge and understanding of priorities and the areas of interest of partners whilst sensitizing them to BvAT programmatic activities.
  • Proficiency in using Windows Operating System as well as Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

Project Manager – Farmer Magazines - The Organic Farmer (TOF) & Mkulima Mbunifu (MkM)

Job purpose & scope:
 The TOF / MkM Project Manager oversees the planning, publication, printing and distribution of the monthly TOF magazine in Kenya and MkM in Tanzania.

Currently also as editor-in-chief of both magazines ensures that the TOF Magazine and Mkulima Mbunifu magazine for Tanzania are proofread and edited for accuracy, easy read and relevance.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Plan content themes and publishing schedules for each TOF and MkM issue in consultation with the relevant project staff and FCP Coordinator;
  • Solicit, write and manage contributions of articles tailored to the themes of each issue of the magazines. In so doing, be responsible for the quality management especially for the content of the magazines and therefore also consult with the parties and contributors involved.
  • Discern and ensure that contributions made, both solicited and unsolicited, are consistent with Biovision’s ecological development strategy and icipe’s policy and positions and support the principles of ecological and sustainable agriculture;
  • Ensure that all space advertisements purchased and sponsorship packages, or otherwise provided by FCP are in line with the ethical and internally set guidelines for TOF and MkM magazines;
  • Coordinate the copy-editing, layout, formatting and proofreading of the magazines with assigned staff, according to the planned schedule;
  • Submit the final formatted versions of TOF and MkM issues to the FCP Coordinator for approval before taking to the Press for printing;
  • Make requisitions for and ensure timely printing of the TOF and MkM  magazines;
  • Coordinate the distribution of the TOF magazine with assigned FCP staff; to subscribers including FCP’s Outreach field staff through the resource centres.
  • Manage, support and supervise TOF and MkM editors and other project staff in line with their responsibilities and contracts;
  • Develop project concept notes and proposals including budgets for the TOF and MkM magazine;
  • Report periodically, and on schedule, on progress/performance/budget execution against the M&E  framework and budget lines of the project;
  • Collaborate with other active like-minded individuals and organizations to improve production and distribution of TOF and MkM magazines in order to promote organic and sustainable farming and environmental management in Kenya.
Education and Knowledge:
  • At least a Masters degree in Agriculture/ Agronomy, Social Sciences, Development Studies or a related course from an accredited institution.
  • Certification in agricultural education and extension, communication, publishing or related field.
Experience:
  • At least 3 years’ progressive working in agricultural education, extension, communications or publishing and editorial activities.
  • Experience in handling publishing projects.
  • Experience in working with creative teams and printing firms to develop print resources such as magazines and booklets.
  • Experience in monitoring implementation of project activities.
  • Experience in writing project concept notes and proposals.
Specialized Knowledge and skills required:
  • Good understanding of the publishing process
  • Excellent writer and editor with ability to interpret and communicate complex scientific ideas through simple messages and formats
  • Proven ability to work with multiple teams
  • Excellent reporting and proposal writing skills
  • Sound knowledge of project monitoring and evaluation
  • Networking and partnership building skills
  • Proficiency in using Windows Operating System as well as Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Personal Attributes:
  • People management experience in particular achieving results through teams in field offices.
  • Have strong relationship management, project finance management and report writing; experience in donor reporting is essential.
  • Team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
