IPA specializes in using randomized impact evaluation to assess the effectiveness of development programs.
 
About the Project: Mistreatment of women during childbirth has been gaining increasing attention in the developing world, including in Kenya, but less is known about women’s experiences of abuse when seeking family planning services and post-abortion care in this setting. 

The primary research objectives of this research is to better understand and measure person-centered care for childbirth, family planning, and abortion / post-abortion care, and also to use this information to inform the development of interventions aimed at improving women’s experiences during care at the facility. 

This study focuses on facilities near peri-urban Nairobi, Kenya.
 
IPA seeks Transcriptionists for hire on consultant basis who will assist with translating and transcribing in-depth interviews.
 
This position is temporary and will be based in Nairobi. No travel will be needed for this position.

Transcriptionist / Translator Responsibilities:

The Transcriptionists / Translators will work closely with both international and local researchers and other field staff to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:
  • Listen to original recording material in Kiswahili and English and type out texts word-for-word
  • Translate Kiswahili text into English, ensuring that translations from the Kiswahili language retain the content and meaning of the original material
  • Proofread to correct spelling mistakes and grammar in English.
  • Accurately relay style or tone so that meaning remains the same when translating or interpreting from Kiswahili to English language
  • Adhere to strict deadlines when dealing with translating written material
  • Protect the confidentiality of material as required
  • Transcriptionists do have the opportunity to work from home after an initial probationary period in the office
  • Check translations of technical and/or medical terms from Kiswahili terminology to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation into English language.
Transcriptionist / Translator Key Requirements:
  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English
  • Strong proficiency in Kiswahili is required
  • Knowledge of additional languages used in Nairobi is an advantage
  • Listening ability to understand and grasp various expressions, idioms and specific vocabulary and their uses
  • Experience in transcription or translation for at least 1 year is preferred 
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Word and excellent typing skills is required for this position
  • Willing to work evenings if needed
  • A diploma or University degree in related field of Kenyan language (Kiswahili) and English language is an advantage.
