Strategic leadership roles in economic development with the Gatsby Foundation

The Gatsby Charitable Foundation is the private foundation of Lord David Sainsbury, with over £1billion already donated or committed to charitable causes. 

In East Africa Gatsby focuses on driving sustainable economic growth through ambitious programmes that seek to transform economic sectors.  

We work in the Tanzanian cotton and textiles sectors, tea sectors in Tanzania and Rwanda, and the Kenyan and Tanzanian forestry sectors, as well as supporting two independent institutions dedicated to sector transformation: Kenya Markets Trust and Msingi. 

We take an analytical and business-like approach, drawing on industry experts, seeking to effect change in market systems.  

As a private foundation and funder-implementer we have the freedom to innovate and take risks, using grants, technical support, loans or equity as appropriate.

We adopt a patient and pragmatic approach, recognising that change can take time, working with governments where needed to secure effective regulatory frameworks. 

Gatsby is now looking to fill several positions to strengthen our senior team.
 

Africa Programmes Directors: Based in London, Nairobi or Dar es Salaam, overseeing and setting the strategy of two or more large sector programmes. Minimum 12 years’ relevant experience.

Deputy Director / Senior Manager Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning: Based in London, Nairobi or Dar es Salaam, providing technical support to programme teams and responsible for the quality of monitoring and learning across the portfolio. Minimum 8 years’ relevant experience.

Programme Manager / Senior Programme Managers: Based in London, Nairobi or Dar es Salaam. London roles support Programme Directors shape programmes or support cross-cutting functions, or EAC posts having responsibility for significant components of a large sector programmes.  Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience.

The ideal candidates will be strategic thinkers with sound judgement, private sector DNA and strategy consulting skills likely honed from a strategy consultancy background, although some experience and understanding of working with governments is highly desirable.
 

Applicants must demonstrate:
  • An ability to understand sector dynamics and approaches to transform entire sectors
  • Strategic leadership – an ability to think ambitiously with a keenness to learn and innovate and an ability to combine thinking and analysis with programme delivery
  • An ability to influence change – with a record of building relationships at senior levels across the private sector, governments and donors.
