Vacancy: Project Accountant
Lifespring Chapel Child Development
Centre: Lifespring Chapel is a community church whose
mission is to develop a whole heart for God, his people and the world through
developing Biblical Maturity, Meaningful Relationships, Biblical Stewardship
and Active Participation in Missions.
In this regard the church in
partnership with Compassion International in Kenya started a ministry/ project
to reach out to the children living in the margins especially in the informal
settlements in Embakasi.
Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.
Currently the Church has
approximately 300 children who are ministered on a daily basis by the church
through the project.
It is in the light of this program
that the church seeks to recruit a project Accountant to steer the ministry and
processes thus addressing poverty that is witnessed in these communities.
Position: Project Accountant
Location: Embakasi,
Nairobi
Overview of the Position: The
Project accountant has the outright role of managing all the project finances
and providing accountability of the receipts and expenditures at the
project.
He/she advises the project Director
and indeed the project itself on the policies that ensure that the organization
is operated on the best international and national accounting standards, which
ensure that the children that the project seeks to minister to receive the best
services arising from the finances.
He/she will have regularly
interactions with the Compassion International representative and other staff
members directly responsible for different departments within the specific
program at Lifespring Chapel.
Professional Relationships
- The Project Accountant reports to the Project
Director
- Project accountant’s position is ultimately
service to God.
Duties and responsibilities
Financial Management:
- Provide Accounting support to all project
activities while ensuring compliance with internal controls, donor
regulations and budget restrictions;
- Record accounting transactions including
coding of payment vouchers before making payment, and ensure an efficient,
proper and transparent financial filing system of all documents relating
to finance are maintained (e.g., monthly payment of bills, contracts, rent
and local wages/allowances.)
- Prepares and examines accounting records,
financial statements, and other financial reports and ensure accuracy,
completeness and conformance to reporting and procedural standards;
- Assist in developing, monitoring and analyzing
budgets, including preparation of periodic budget monitoring reports that
compare budgeted costs to actual costs;
- Plan for cash flow requirements for project
activities and submit updated cash forecast and monthly cash requests to
the project director/ Board
- Process and make payments as provided in the
approved budget;
- Ensure no processing of monthly payroll
without the necessary timesheets and confirm accuracy of all timesheets
before processing of payroll;
- Ensure timely recovery of all advances
including travel and mid-month advances and provide monthly update of any
outstanding advances to the Project Director;
- Assist with facilitation of internal and
external audit procedures as required.
Compliance and Enforcement:
- Ensuring compliance and enforcement of
internal policies, donor regulations and budget restrictions on all
projects;
- Ensure proper procurement procedures are
adhered to at all times, including maintaining of vendor contracts, lease
agreements, and any other service contracts as may be required;
- Ensure that proper authorization is obtained
for all disbursements. Assess accuracy and completeness of documentation
and conformity with reporting and procedural standards.

Skills and Qualifications
- A committed Christian with a passion for
Christ’s Holistic mission
- A university degree from a recognized
university in the areas of Commerce or Economics.
- Must have a certification in Accounting with a
minimum of CPA II
- Considerable experience in Social /
development work and working with children in the informal settlements is
an added advantage.
- Proficiency in computer applications such as
MS Office, Accounting software packages and work plans
- Ability to conduct household and community
visits in the informal settlements in conditions of limited comfort
- A demonstrated understanding and working in
past compassion international projects shall be an added advantage
