2. Job Purpose: The primary role of the position is to provide
technical support to CRS and stakeholders to implement the School WASH Project
in Nairobi.
3. Key Responsibilities and
Accountabilities:
Reporting to the Program Manager –
Health, the position holder is expected to take lead in the implementation of
the Kenya Urban School Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) project as well as
assist in the preparation of technical and financial reports.
The position holder will also play
key role in building the capacity of schools’ representatives on WASH related
matters and build close working relationships with county and national
government structures. In addition, s/he will also take lead in the project’s
monitoring, evaluation and learning aspects as well as prepare progress
reports.
4. Main Responsibilities and
Activities:
The main responsibilities for the
Project Officer WASH under the Kenya School WASH Project in Nairobi include;
- Coordinate planning and implementation of the
project with stakeholders.
- Based on the needs assessment, organize
trainings and coaching activities for school representatives i.e. pupils,
teachers, parents and board members.
- Assist in the assessment and monitoring of
school WASH infrastructure construction.
- Plan, organize and coordinate quarterly
implementation review meetings with stakeholders.
- Prepare annual/quarterly/monthly progress
reports and work plans.
- Work closely with CRS Kenya M&E unit in
monitoring progress and evaluating impacts. This will entail consistent
tracking and identification of program performance gaps/challenges and
recommending timely remedial actions.
- Take lead in the documentation and
dissemination of lesson leant, best practices and success stories from the
project.
- Work with Program Manager Health, to track
budget spending including preparation of financial forecasts for the
project.
- Participate in CRS WASH learning alliances and
any other workshops/seminars/studies/meetings as may be directed by the
supervisor.
- Accompany project visitors to project sites as
appropriate.
5. Key Working Relationships
Internal
- Health Unit team, CRS Program Quality and
Support Department.
External
- Pupils, teachers, parents and board members in
the targeted schools, county and national government line ministries/departments
(water and irrigation, public Health and sanitation and education) and
project consultants.
6. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requirement
a. Qualifications
- University degree in Public Health. Post
graduate qualification in Public Health will be an added advantage.
- A minimum of 3 years progressive experience in
implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene projects with a focus on
sanitation and hygiene promotion, preferably in urban informal settlements
and in depth knowledge on sanitation and hygiene promotion in schools.
- Experience working with the MoH and MOE will
be an added advantage
- Excellent oral and written communication
skills (English).
b. Knowledge
- Knowledge of participatory development
methodologies including Participatory Learning and Action (PLA),
participatory assessment including assessing community environmental
vulnerabilities and hazards, Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation
Transformation (PHAST), Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and Children
Hygiene and Sanitation Training (CHAST).
- Knowledgeable in the government of Kenya
policies and legislations in the sectors of water, environmental health,
public health and sanitation.
c. Skills and Abilities
- Additional training and skills in sanitation
and hygiene promotion through children focused hygiene and sanitation
approaches.
- Demonstrated skills in project monitoring and
evaluation as well as project progress documentation.
- Demonstrated skills and ability to facilitate
training sessions and in particular, sanitation and hygiene training
sessions.
