Job Title: Special Needs Education (SNE) Teacher
2 Positions
Reporting To: Education officer
Matrix Management: Education Program
Base Location: Dadaab
Job Summary: Overall responsibility to implement and
evaluate curriculum in least restrictive environment to children with SNE and
impart knowledge, skills, develop personality and character that will provide a
lasting and inspiring impact on their lives.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
1. Curriculum implementation and
evaluation
·
To prepare all professional records
for curriculum implementation
·
Develop teaching/learning resources
for effective and motivating lessons
·
Keep all records and use them to
improve performance
·
Conduct continuous assessment tests
and terminal exams mark and record results.
·
Train children in co-curricular
activities so as to compete others
·
Participate in curriculum review
2. Training teachers on modern trends
in special needs education
·
Train teachers in new teaching
pedagogy that is responsive to SNE child
·
Assist the teachers develop basic
theoretical and practical knowledge about the teaching profession.
·
Train teachers on production of low
cost teaching materials
·
Facilitate training of teachers in
maintenance of equipment
·
Participate in workshops and seminars
for teachers particularly Saturday TOT.
·
Develop in the teacher the ability to
communicate effectively.
3. Management of compensatory
equipment for children with SNE
·
Assess children and prescribe the
right equipment for use.
·
Train children on the proper use any
equipment given to boost residual ability.
·
Sensitize other children and school
community on special equipment
·
To ensure that given equipment are
put to proper use
·
Ensure maintenance and repair of
equipment are done regularly
4. Facilitate Community participation
in promoting special needs education
·
Guide parents to form parents groups
for children with SNE
·
Train parents of children on basic
concepts for up bringing of their children
·
Participate in society meetings for
children with SNE
·
Involve the refugee community through
the school PTA in special needs issues
·
Assist the community to give children
with SNE equal opportunity in learning through mobilization
·
Encourage the school committee to
make the school compounds environmentally friendly and barrier free.
5. Managing Classroom resources
·
Responsible for proper management of
classroom resources issued for promoting teaching/learning environment i.e.
textbooks, teaching aids and desks and others materials.
·
Accountable for keeping proper and
accurate lists of books issued to students and ensure school authority kept
aware of any discrepancies.
·
Ensure proper utilization
compensatory equipment during classroom instruction
·
Ensure proper storage and safety of
equipment after use by children
6. Promote partnership with local
educational Institutions
·
Conduct community mobilization and
sensitization on significance of Special needs education.
·
Regularly monitor the attendance,
scholastic performance and learning needs of the children with special needs in
the camp in close liaison with other special institutions.
·
Initiate close relationship with
teachers of local Kenyan Special Institutions so as to share approaches for
effective teaching in refugee-local schools
·
Develop refugee inter-camp
competition in co- curricular activities as sports, games, drama and music
festivals.
·
Also train children so as to
participate in games and sports for students with special needs nationally and
beyond.
7. Development of Human Potential in
Students
·
Prepare high achieving pupils’ for
post primary education
·
Develop the pupils’ potential
abilities to their maximum through a variety of experiences.
·
Develop in pupils’ an awareness and
appreciation of innovation in the field of education and an ability to utilize
them.
·
Develop in the pupils’ an awareness
of the principles which underline good human relationship and use of these in
their dealings with the community.
·
Prepare the pupils’ to face life with
self-confidence and independence.
·
Promote clear logical thought and
critical judgment.
·
Offer career guidance to pupils’.
·
Conduct counseling for pupils’ in
need of counseling. Liaise with parents of individual learners for effective
delivery of counseling services.
8. Others
·
Work in a team spirit with other
teachers to promote understanding of school mission and goals successfully.
·
Establish closer relationship with
other Islamic Relief sector colleagues to strengthen the existing positive
image of the refugee education sector.
·
Take advantage of the available
opportunities in Islamic Relief to foster self-development.
Authority:
·
Has full authority on matters
pertaining to effective curriculum implementation in assigned classroom tasks
and is the point person for children with special needs in education.
·
Has the mandate on what action should
be taken against deviant learners
·
Advisor of the head teacher’s
inspector of special needs and adult education and education supervisor on all
matters related to curriculum, teaching and co-curricula activities.
·
Has to give professional guidance on
matters touching on special needs education.
Contacts / Key Relationships: Work closely with other sectors and in
collaboration with UNHCR, partner agencies on education issues for children
with special needs.
Working Conditions:
·
The position is in a refugee camp in
the North Eastern Province of Kenya.
·
The climate is harsh (semi-arid) and
area prone to banditry menace.
·
Teaching will essentially be carried
out in refugee schools.
Qualifications:
·
. Education: Degree or Diploma in
Special Needs Education
·
Experience: Primary and secondary
school teacher of children with SNE
·
Certificate: Has attended short
courses on special needs education
·
Competencies: Assessment teacher of
children with special needs and teacher trainer
·
MUST be registered by TSC.
Job Title: Education Officer
Reporting To: Senior Education Officer
Matrix Management: Education Program
Base Location: Dadaab
Job Summary: In consultation with Senior Education
Officer, the holder of the position will have overall responsibility on
supervision of National teachers and Assistant education officers, monitoring
and evaluation of refugee education activities in IFO refugee camp and Ifo 2
east and west camp.
He reports to the Senior Education
Officer.
Key Responsibilities
·
Check on Work plans of National
Teachers and AEO’s and ensure implementation of the same.
·
Assign duties appropriately to
National Teachers and AEO’s according to their JD.
·
Guide and Support National Teachers
as they train and mentor education supervisors, head teachers incentive
teachers, and school management committees in order to ensure quality delivery
of programs.
·
Work closely with M&E and SMP
supervisor for the timely production of SMP reports.
·
Ensuring that the implementation of
Islamic Relief’s Education projects promotes capacity building to the maximum
degree possible with local communities, the Education system, UNHCR, local
NGOs, CBOs, and government staff and agencies.
·
Should adhere to CPP (Child Protection
Policy)
·
Ensure timely production of reports
by collecting reports from education officers and forward them to senior
education officer for compilation into one report.
·
Document programme learning and
disseminate lessons learned to key stakeholders in the field.
·
Support National teachers to identify
areas for development and jointly plan capacity building opportunities
·
Ensure education team’s strengths are
identified and recognized for programme and individual development
·
Undertake any other duties as
assigned by the Senior Education Officer, M&E Officer, Area Manager or
other key Management Staff.
Required Skills
·
At least 3 years of progressive
experience in primary education programs for refugees or rural communities.
·
Experience gained within an
international humanitarian NGO will be an added advantage.
·
Strong analytical and administrative
skills in the management of education/programs consisting of primary education.
·
Experience in report writing and
excellent computer skills.
·
Experience in Training of
Trainers/Facilitators skills (TOT & TOF) an advantage
Qualifications
·
Diploma or Degree in education.
·
Proven knowledge on integrated Early
Childhood Development training, curriculum development, implementation and
educational administration.
·
Proven academic or on-job training
and understanding of the Project Cycle model in managing humanitarian
assistance.
