Our client, Uchumi Supermarkets
Limited (USL) is a chain of retail supermarkets currently operating in East
Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania), and is the only listed retail outlet in
the Eastern African Region.
USL is currently undergoing a major
restructuring to ensure efficiency and support its growth strategy.
In order to execute and sustain its
growth and expansion strategy, USL is seeking to recruit result oriented
individuals with drive, vision and creativity to manage the chain of
Supermarkets in the following capacity:
Head of Human Resources
Ref: HR/06/2015
Reporting to the Chief Executive
Officer, the Head of Human Resources will develop and deliver people management
strategies which support the Company’s overall strategic objectives making a
contribution at both strategic and operational level in order to identify HR
priorities and recommend appropriate people management solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Developing, implementing and maintaining HR
policies and procedures to ensure effective, fair and consistent
management of staff throughout the company;
- Preparing, implementing and monitoring of the
annual HR Plan to support the overall strategic aims and objectives of the
Company;
- Developing, guiding, and advising on
structure, optimal staffing, reward/compensation, recruitment, transfers,
termination, training, performance management, and talent management of
all staff within the Company;
- Preparing and controlling the approved HR
operations budget;
- Identifying global best practice to keep the
USL HR function and the organisation as a whole updated;
- Providing policy advice and guidance on
industrial and employee relations matters and maintaining industrial peace
and harmony in the Company;
- Advising management and line managers on
employee relations matters, labour regulations, and emerging industrial
relations trends;
- Maintaining cordial relations and consulting
widely with the Unionised staff, Federation of Kenya Employers, Industrial
Court and the Ministry of Labour;
- Managing investigations, disciplinary and
grievance matters;
- Ensure development and implementation of the
performance management systems; and
- Leading the HR team to deliver all planned and
agreed department and individual performance targets to ensure that the HR
department is efficient and value adding to the Company.
Personal Specification
- Bachelors’ degree in Business related field;
- At least seven (7) years’ experience at a
senior management level in a large and complex organisation;
- A member of IHRM; and
- Demonstrated record of excellent negotiation,
people management and communication skills.
Head of Treasury
Ref: HT/06/2015
Reporting to the Chief Financial
Officer, the Head of Treasury will manage the treasury function and credit
control and continuously resolve as well as improve the current accounting
systems in addition to providing management with accurate financial information.
Key Responsibilities:
- Managing and advising on long-term and
short-term investment strategies;
- Reviewing weekly and monthly performance of
USL, highlighting areas of concern to management; and advising
accordingly;
- Managing all aspects of in-house investment
portfolios;
- Forecasting cash requirements and advising on
investment of surplus funds;
- Ensuring the completeness of revenue by
comparing marketing statistics with financial information;
- Reviewing and recommending changes to the
investment policies based on the market conditions;
- Approving payment requests and facilitating
the processing of payments; and
- Appraising staff, identifying their training
needs and developing training programmes to enhance their skills.
Personal Specification
- A fully qualified accountant with current
membership to a professional accounting body;
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognised
university;
- A minimum of 7 years working experience, at
least 5 of which should be in a senior management and/or advisory role
within Treasury function; and
- Good knowledge and experience on all aspects
of a financial institution, accounting and IFRS standards and legal points
of view is required.
Chief Financial Officer
Ref: CFO/06/2015
Reporting to the Chief Executive
Officer USL, the Chief Financial Officer will be responsible for the functions
of Finance and Procurement to ensure implementation of sound accounting,
financial management and control system and procedures for the USL.
Key Responsibilities:
- Developing and maintaining an efficient
financial management, organisational governance and administration system
in accordance with the financial procedures of USL and International
Accounting Standards and best management practice;
- Advising the CEO and other key members of
senior management on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, investment
priorities, and policy matters;
- Ensuring effective and timely financial
management on all USL matters; and reporting in accordance with laid down
guidelines across all branches;
- Developing, administering and monitoring the
USL budget and work plan in accordance with the USL financial management
procedures in consultation with departmental heads;
- Supervising the accurate preparation and
disbursement of the company’s payroll to ensure that statutory deductions
are made and remitted to relevant authorities and that all and only bona
fide employees are paid;
- Liaising with the Heads of departments and
divisional directors to ensure economic and efficient use of company
resources;
- Managing the Company’s cash-flow by constantly
reviewing of cash flow statements, performance against budget, credit
facilities and cash and collection and approving payments to suppliers as
appropriate;
- Supervising and reviewing the maintenance of
USLs’ books of accounts such as fixed assets register, stocks, debtors,
creditors and cash books for accuracy and timely updates;
- Liaising with consultants and regulators and
tax authorities to ensure compliance with laid down internal and external
regulations;
- Overseeing effective treasury management to
ensure effective cash flow and cash flow analysis;
- Ensuring adequate internal controls and
compliance with applicable laws, policies & procedures;
- Undertaking due diligence on new initiatives
or investment opportunities as required; and
- Leading the Finance team members to deliver
all planned and agreed department and individual performance targets to
ensure that the various sections are efficient and value adding to the
Society.
Personal Specification
- Master’s degree from a recognised university;
- A fully qualified accountant with current

Chief Operations Officer
Ref: COO/06/2015
Under the overall guidance of the
CEO, the Chief Operations Officer will have the overall responsibility of
managing the value chain of core activities of the retail chain of supermarkets
including inbound, operations and outbound activities at a group level.
Key Responsibilities:
- Working in partnership with the CEO to plan
and formulate strategies in collaboration with the leadership team and
Board of Directors;
- Managing operations and overseeing the general
performance of all retail chains both in Kenya and in the region while
ensuring all legal, corporate governance and regulatory requirements are
complied with;
- Coordinating and driving the annual operations
plan and annual budget to support the strategic direction set by the
Board;
- Providing leadership in managing the business
operations, product and business development;
- Ensuring operating procedures and controls are
established and communicated to solidify management control and direction
of the organization;
- Building out the supply chain and logistics
back-bone to support the growth of the Company;
- Overseeing the overall operations of the
business including store planning and design, distribution and logistics;
- Managing key supplier relationships and
improving back-margins;
- Identifying, researching and exploiting of
potential growth and expansion opportunities including mergers,
acquisitions, potential investors, both local and overseas;
- Developing and implementing regular reporting
(to be shared with the Board) on key metrics and success factors to
determine the effectiveness and efficiency of operating conditions; and
- Motivating and leading a high performance
leadership team to consistently achieve sales, profitability, cash flow
targets and all business objectives.
Personal Specification
- A Master’s degree in a Business or Operations
related field with at least 8 years’ experience, five (5) years of which
must be in a leadership level in a retail supermarket industry or any
other relevant field;
- Proven track record of having successfully
facilitated progressive organizational change and development within a
growing organization;
- Experience in value chain management will be
an added advantage;
- Excellent judgment and creative problem
solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills; and
- Strong mentoring, coaching experience to a
team with diverse levels of expertise.
Chief Executive Officer
Ref: CEO/06/2015
Reporting to the Board of Directors,
the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will have overall strategic responsibility
for USL’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission.
Key Responsibilities:
- Formulating and implementing the USL’s vision,
mission and strategic direction in consultation with the Board of
Directors where necessary;
- Providing leadership in developing,
implementing, and evaluation of USL Strategic Plan in line with
shareholders expectations;
- Undertaking regular and appropriate Financial/Investment
management and reporting to the Board of Directors on the performance of
USL;
- Building relevant organisational capacity to
delivery on strategy by leading, guiding, directing and evaluating the
work of other executive leaders;
- Optimising returns to shareholders through
operational growth and effective capital management;
- Achieving operational results for all key
metrics in line with the annual business budget and plans;
- Ensuring operating procedures and controls are
established and communicated to solidify management control and direction
of the organisation;
- Maintaining awareness of the external and
internal competitive landscape, opportunities for expansion, customers,
new markets and new industry developments;
- Developing business models to secure long term
business positioning to ensure the USL’s success;
- Building leadership team and ensure adequate
succession planning throughout the organisation;
- Building internal and external strategic
partnerships while liaising with relevant stakeholders to ensure that USL
operates in a conducive environment;
- Ensuring compliance with applicable statutory
and regulatory requirements and establishing mitigation measures against
emerging business risks;
- Formulating and implementing best-practice
management principles while fostering a corporate culture that promotes
ethics, integrity, and sound corporate governance;
- Maintaining a conducive work environment,
suitable for attracting, developing and retaining a dynamic and competent
workforce; and
- Ensuring effective public relations and
enhancing the company’s corporate image with all stakeholders and
partners.
Personal Specification
- A Masters’ degree in Business or Operations
related field with at least ten (10) years’ experience at an executive
management level within the retail supermarket industry or FMCG in a large
and complex organisation;
- Demonstrated record of revenue and profit
growth and new business development; and
- Highly innovative, performance and results
driven coupled with good business acumen and excellent leadership skills
particularly in strategy formulation and execution.
