Job Purpose:
 The Project officer will be required to support the implementation of the Kenya Programme and activities on security and justice, governance and peace building and small arms control.
 

The ability to work with the project coordinator to follow-up and action upon receiving information in a timely and effective manner are critical. 

The incumbent will be expected to undertake thorough conflict analysis, build scenarios and provide timely information that will inform actions by the relevant policy decision makers.

Duties and Responsibilities
 
1. Strategic and programme development
  • Assist with regular analysis of political and security developments and themes in Kenya
2. Programme Implementation
  • Support the process of planning, development and implementation of projects/programme
  • Assist in the development and implementation of research and assessments and data collection, provision of feedback to research planning and drafts, communication with data collectors, designers, editors and printing houses
  • Assist in organising and facilitating dialogue meetings, workshops and seminars with government representatives, civil society and international organisations to:
  1. share experiences and lessons learnt;
  2. promote cooperation;
  3. Raise awareness of efforts to prevent violent conflict and promote cooperative approaches to security.
3. Funding and Financial Management
  • Assist in identifying funding opportunities and fundraising
  • With the programme teams, perform organisation activities such as drafting project reports, developing programme budgets and cash flows and regularly monitoring expenditure.
4. Communications and Advocacy
  • Identify and develop relationships with key strategic partners in government, civil society, media and the international community for promoting peace and security in Kenya
  • Contribute in developing appropriate strategies for advocacy with partners.
  • Monitor, collect and share information on security, governance and peacebuilding, small arms control.
  • Provide daily major peace and security updates covered in the media and documents successes as relates the project implementation.
Person Specification
 
Essential Requirements:
  • A recognised first degree or professional qualification in social sciences, community development or any other related field.
  • Minimum 3years’ experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of project administration, planning and programming.
  • A good understanding of security/peace and conflict prevention issues, and an active interest in the workings of civil society.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral and ability to relate sensitively to diverse groups.
  • Experience of preparing budgets and financial reporting.
  • Good report-writing skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Swahili.
  • Good interpersonal and team working skills
  • Flexibility in working in diverse situations with unpredictable working hours.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Willingness to travel to diverse locations in support of projects’ implementation.
Desirable Requirements:
  • A relevant post-graduate qualification.
  • Experience in designing and facilitating workshops and seminars.
  • Knowledge and experience of community security.
  • A good understanding of the criminal justice system
  • Skills in social participatory research.
