Government Job Vacancies - Kenya Cultural Centre

The Kenya Cultural Centre (KCC) incorporating Kenya National Theatre (KNT) is the country's oldest expressive cultural institution established in 1951 through Cap 218 Laws of Kenya. 

KCC is the national centre for cultural engagement, discourse, performance and research. 

The Centre incorporates dynamic and aesthetic public spaces for harmonious connections, and is an institution which embraces and encourages diversity and pluralist perspectives.

The Centre operates as a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency (SAGA) and is currently domiciled under the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts.

The Kenya National Theatre which is part of the Centre is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment under the aegis of Kenya @50 Legacy Projects. 


It is anticipated that the refurbishment will be completed by end of June 2015.

Box Office Assistant

Ref: KCC/01/2015/03

Reports to:
 Head of Programmes

Broad Function: The Box Office Manager will be responsible for monitoring all services related to the theatre box office including ticket sales, bookings for various facilities, maintaining the ticket sales database and system and managing the schedule of events for the Kenya Cultural Centre / National Theatre (KCC/NT).

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular box office hours to supervise phone, email and walk up ticket orders
  • Maintain clear communication for the patrons of KCC/NT and the public including updating messages on the online and digital display systems.
  • Prepare appropriate sales reports and financial accounting reports for ticket sales and bookings.
  • Manage and administer the back end of the ticketing software system and manage subscription packages and special promotions using this system.
  • Assist the marketing team to promote ticket sales in the community by communicating with various hotels, touring companies as well as other business and community groups.
  • Oversee the mailing and distribution of promotional material to patrons and members of the public.
Academic / Professional Qualifications
  • Diploma in Business Management, Sales & Ticketing, specialising in Marketing and Operations Management or equivalent.
  • Proficient in PC-based Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and other relevant database management programs.
  • Internet proficiency is essential.
Experience
  • Point of Sales Ticketing experience in busy environment dealing with Public Programs  is helpful, but not necessary. 
  • Candidates with experience in sales, retail and hospitality are encouraged to  apply.  
Skills
  • Excellent public relations skills and the ability to deal with client concerns efficiently and positively.
  • Ability to manage financial and box office transactions efficiently with attention to detail, and in a secure manner.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanour and able to handle information in a confidential and trustworthy manner.
  • Skill and accuracy in dealing with cash and credit card transactions.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects, meet deadlines and communicate effectively in a frequently flexible and quick-moving environment.
  • Ability to train and supervise box office staff as needed.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with volunteers, apprentices and interns, to provide an environment for volunteers, apprentices and interns in which they are adequately prepared and trained, and appropriately monitored.

Theatre Sound Engineer

Reports to:
 Head of Technical Production

Broad Function:
 The Theatre Sound Engineer will perform all duties related to sound engineering for performances, shows, presentations and productions at KCC/NT including operating, managing, monitoring and maintaining of all sound equipment at KCC/NT.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintenance of quality sound throughout performances/presentations including amplification, mixing, recording, synching and reproducing sounds and effects for productions.
  • Maintaining and looking over sound equipment including repairing of equipment and troubleshooting.
  • Work within a team environment that includes lighting technician, stage manager, as well as stage and production staff in planning and carrying out structure of sound for every performance.
  • Maintaining the work area to ensure safety and productivity.
Academic / Professional Qualifications
  • Diploma in Technology for Creative Presentations and Sound Technology or equivalent experience, training and education in audio electronics.
  • Certification in basic computer skills for MAC/PC
Experience
  • Knowledge of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) production equipment and digital audio workstations, microphone and signal techniques.
  • At least three years experience in audio electronics specifically for sound playback and live mixing including knowledge of digital and analogue audio equipment including sound consoles, speakers, microphones and wireless systems.
  • Basic knowledge and skills in electrical wiring and rigging.
  • Experience in music and theatrical sound and audio engineering is preferred but not required.
Skills
  • Must be available for on the job training and available to work long and unpredictable hours.
  • Must have good sense of hearing, physical fitness and agility (including ability to carry heavy loads and to work at heights of up to 20 Feet) is essential.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with the technical production team and other departments.
  • Ability to work within a team structure as well as independently.
  • Punctuality and time management skills to ensure efficiency for set ups, show calls, meetings and work calls.
  • Neat, orderly and efficient work ethic in order to maintain cleanliness and order in all sound areas.
Head of Programmes

Reports to:
 Executive Director

Broad Function:
 The Head of Programs will be responsible for overall development and implementation of the Centre's Programs. 

This covers Strategy, provision of guidance and strategic monitoring of all programs and activities in accordance with the Centre's Strategic Plan.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Effectively manage the programmes department, give guidance and strategic leadership to facilitate the development and implementation of Kenya Cultural Centre's Creative Programs and Events.
  • Carry out promotion
  • Provide strategic support and professional development of opportunities for established and emerging creative cultural practitioners, groups and initiatives through networking and linkages.
  • Enhance collaboration and communication within the creative cultural sector locally, regionally and internationally.
  • Carrying out research
  • Implement Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) for Kenya Cultural Centre's programs and projects in accordance with the government legislation on PPPs.
  • Overseeing content and audience development initiatives for the Centre's programs
  • Improve the relevance and visibility
  • Keeping of arts and culture information by creating, maintaining and updating appropriate resource materials.
  • Strategic alliances: Identify local and international strategic partners through Memoranda of Understanding (MOU), Collaborations and Cooperation agreements.
Academic/ Professional Qualifications
  • At least a Bachelor degree in Social Sciences, Management or any other related fields.
  • Qualification in Arts and Culture Management related field is an added advantage.
Experience
  • At least 5 years experience in Management of arts and culture programs related field.
Skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • Demonstrative proficiency in and understanding of Business Administrative processes, Project Management and Marketing as an added advantage
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to build personal relationship with varied cadres of staff, key players / leaders in the industry, stakeholders / donor partners.
