Chief Accountant Job in Kenya - KEMRI

Job Title: Chief Accountant
 
Henry Jackson Foundation for Medical Research International (HJF MRI) in collaboration with KEMRI / Walter Reed Project, HIV Program - Kericho is seeking to fill the above position. 

The Walter Reed Project- Kericho carries out HIV AIDS vaccine and therapeutic research, and supports HIV prevention, care and treatment programs in South Rift Valley.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepare financial projections and budgets for approval by the management and donors.
  • Support management in preparation, co-ordination and control of budget, cash flow projections and actual analysis.
  • Prepare, consolidate and distribute timely monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements reflecting status of programs on grant-to-date basis in accordance with International Accounting Standards, International Financial Reporting Standards and donor requirements.
  • Ensure effective financial accounting systems and up-to-date books of accounts and generate timely reports and analysis as required.
  • Develop and modify policies/procedures/systems in accordance with organizational needs and objectives, and government regulations.
  • Establish financial tracking system enabling the organization to know the status of the expenditure against approved budgets at any time.
  • Monitor expenses in relation to budgets and ensure proper account codes are being charged for expenses.
  • Ensure that funds are managed according to the organization’s regulations and accounting system.
  • Analyze monthly department budgeting and accounting reports to maintain expenditure controls.
  • Monitor the overall liquidity of the organization and the cash flow position, and facilitate requests as necessary.
  • Ensure monthly bank reconciliations are prepared accurately and promptly.
  • Ensure travel/training advances are reconciled promptly.
  • Verify supporting documents for project and administrative expenditure.
  • Supervise accounting staff.
  • Ensure provision of in-house training to the field finance teams and accountants.
Grants Management
  • Monitor compliance with grant funding requirements and provide appropriate guidance to program staff including allowable and non-allowable costs, grant closeout, preparation of budget modifications and requests for carry over or extensions as needed.
  • Support preparation of grant applications including budgets, certifications and other required supporting documentation.
  • Support preparation of and award of sub-grants including review of applications, financial assessments and capacity building.
  • Carry out analysis and preparation of appropriate grants reports to various donors and stakeholders.
Requirements:
  • University Degree in commerce or Administration, Masters Degree will be an advantage.
  • Professional accounting qualification such as CPA or ACCA.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in accounting and budgeting position.
  • Experience in managing large donor-funded budgets and reporting to donors.
  • Knowledge of accounting software, QuickBooks and Dynamics.
Terms: 1 year renewable contract. The first three months will be probation period.
