Water and Habitat Engineer Field Officer - Baidoa
 
The Water & Habitat Unit carries out various projects in Somalia which include construction and rehabilitation of various structures, such as water tanks, health structures, hospitals, in addition to water projects such as boreholes and wells rehabilitation and rain water catchment’s structures. 

In the frame of its activities, the Somali Delegation in Nairobi is seeking a skilled and highly motivated Somali National to fill the Water and Habitat (Engineer) Field Officer position, based in Somalia. 

Supervision of construction and rehabilitation of “civil works projects” in all regions of Somalia. 

Civil works projects” are defined here as water storage and water distribution infrastructures, typically comprising of concrete elevated water tanks, storage & generator houses, animal troughs, tap-stands and pipework but may be tailored and include other elements depending on the situation).

Main Responsibilities:
  • Assessing needs, prioritizing, studying feasibility and proposing projects.
  • For non-standard projects, making the necessary calculations and preparing the necessary technical documentation including detailed and accurate technical drawings and Bill of Quantities.
  • Ensuring a close follow up with Contractors’ site engineers to ensure that work is being carried out according to the approved contractual documents (Contracts and addendums, BoQ, drawings, technical specifications and planning);
  • Carrying out, following up and reporting results of the test samples where and when appropriate.
  • Interacting with the ICRC project manager for clarification in design if necessary.
  • Facilitating communication between the WatHab Department and the Contractor on site.
  • Monitoring and ensuring that all works are carried out in accordance with safety requirements.
  • Ensure professional contacts of supervision with Contractors.
  • May occasionally be asked to attend WASH regional meetings .
  • Writing field trip reports based on given guidelines, including: Assessment reports Proposals including rationales, feasibility, detailed technical drawings and Bills of Quantities Progress, reports (standard format) at every significant stage of the project, Completion reports (standard format) upon project completion.
  • Interprets accurately from English to National language and vice versa during field visits and otherwise, as required.
  • Translates documents from English to National language and vice versa as required.
Minimum Requirements:
  • University degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years work experience in field supervision of construction projects
  • Excellent reading and comprehension of technical drawings and schematics
  • Good technical sketching skills
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Somali
  • Good computer skills (Word, Excel, etc.). Knowledge of CAD software is an advantage.
  • Good leadership and communication skills
  • Good knowledge of the social and geographical environment of Somalia
  • Good organisational and administrative skills
