Job Title: Field Officer, Dig Deep

Duty Station: Mara, Talek Area – based in shared NGO Head Quarters of Dig Deep’s partner NGO the Olare Orok Motorogi Trust
 

Overview of Dig Deep: Dig Deep works with communities in rural Kenya to improve their access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). 

We achieve this through partnering with Kenyan NGOs, CBOs, schools and county governments to fund and facilitate the construction of WASH infrastructure and hygiene promotion activities.

We are a small, rapidly growing, international NGO with 8 staff supported by 300+ volunteers based in both Kenya and the UK.
 

Job Summary: The Field Officer will represent Dig Deep on the ground in the Mara WASH Project Cluster working with local NGOs, Water Project Committees and specific schools to ensure Dig Deep’s water and sanitation projects meet their objectives.
 
Objective 1: Identification and selection of appropriate partner schools and communities 
Activities:
  • Undertake baseline assessment activities using established tools (e.g. surveys, focus groups, structured interviews, mapping)
Objective 2: Implementation of Training Activities
 
Activities:
  • Coordinating and undertaking planning activities with partner schools and communities (e.g. community meetings, focus groups, WatSan committee meetings)
  • Support other Dig Deep staff in the coordination and implementation of training activities
Objective 3: Implementation of WASH Infrastructure Construction
 
Activities:
  • Coordinating and undertaking planning activities with partner schools and communities
  • Formally agreeing infrastructure construction activities with partner schools and communities through supporting the drawing up and signing of Memorandums of Understanding
  • Coordinating and undertaking monitoring of construction to ensure WASH infrastructure is delivered on budget to contractually agreed standards
Objective 4: Monitoring, Evaluating and Learning from Completed Projects
 
Activities:
  • Coordinating and undertaking end line assessment activities (e.g. surveys, focus groups, structured interviews, mapping)
  • Training partner communities and schools in use of monitoring tools and coordinating collection of the data gathered
  • Coordinating evaluation meetings with partner schools and communities to assess the extent to which agreed objectives set in planning stages have been met and identify lessons learned and ongoing support requirements where necessary
Objective 5: Undertaking Specific Governance and Marketing Responsibilities
 
Activities:
  • Monthly project status reporting to Country Director
  • Monthly charity marketing requirements (e.g. blog post, social media updates)
Qualifications
  • Degree in Water Engineering/Construction Engineering/Public Health with experience in water, sanitation, hygiene and health education projects with at least 2 years’ experience working in project management, preferably within a WASH context.
OR
  • Relevant degree with at least 3 years’ experience in project management, preferably in a WASH context.
Skills and Experience
 
Essential
  • Experience in monitoring WASH infrastructure construction
  • Experience in implementing hygiene promotion programmes and/or community led methodologies or similar
  • Experience in implementing Menstrual Hygiene Management programmes
  • Experience in implementing Operation and Management programmes
  • Experience of undertaking field work and communicating directly with beneficiaries in a rural context
  • Experience in implementing CLTS in rural context
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel
  • Experience in field work logistics
  • Fluency in spoken English
  • Fluency in spoken Swahili
  • Ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders (local and international NGOs, local and national Government, beneficiaries, partners, suppliers etc.)
Preferred
  • Prior WASH experience or at least 2 years with a humanitarian organization carrying out development activities.
  • Fluency in spoken Maa
