Purpose of Post: Under
the Earth Science Education Initiative in Africa, UNESCO has recently launched
two important projects:
(1)
the African Network of Earth Science Institutions (ANESI) to promote Earth
science research and training in Africa, and
(2)
the assessment of environmental and health impacts of mining activities in
Sub-Saharan African Countries.
Under
the overall direction of the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern
Africa (hereafter referred to as the UNESCO Nairobi Office), and the direct
supervision of the Earth Science Programme Specialist, the incumbent will serve
as Research/Programme Assistant to provide broad based support to the
implementation of Earth science programme in general and of the above two
projects in particular.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities
He/she
will:
- Participate
in the implementation of the project work plans and ensure compliance with
specific assigned objectives.
- Follow-up
the formulation and the implementation of projects by compiling data,
analyzing and evaluating information, and drafting the documents.
- Contribute
towards the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of programmes,
projects, and activities.
- Contribute
in the planning and organization of capacity building programmes,
including organization of training workshops, field visits, and seminars.
- Ensure
the accurate and timely input of programme information in computerized
programme system and the issuance of status reports for monitoring and
evaluation purposes.
- Receive
and screen all internal and external communications, attaching necessary
background information for review by supervisors, and maintain the sectors
records and information.
- Organize
and maintain correspondences and all documents related to programme
implementation
- Follow
up the procurement, financial and logistical issues in relation to
the project implementation
- Perform
other duties, as required by the supervisor and the Director of the
Office.

- Advance
university degree in natural sciences (geology, hydrology, environmental
sciences or related fields)
- Two
years of relevant professional experience in public or private sector
- Experience
within the UN system will be an added advantage
- Two
year of national/regional professional experience working with two or more
GIS packages;
- Strong
written and oral skills in conveying GIS/spatial information
- Knowledge
of computer and software applications is a must (word, excel, PowerPoint
and internet)
- Fluency
in English; knowledge of French will be an asset.
