The Community Owned Financial
Institution (COFI) is the first Sharia-compliant savings and credit cooperative
(SACCO) in Kenya.
COFI with the support of USAID
through the Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands - Improving Resilience
(REGAL-IR), provides pastoralists, farmers and small- to-medium-sized
entrepreneurs (SME) and other actors in the livestock value chain with the
financial backing needed to build their businesses.
Finance Manager
Reporting to the General Manager, the
Finance Manager will be responsible for providing financial and management
support to COFI Office.
S/he will supervise the day-to-day
financial operations of COFI office, budgeting, ensure internal control systems
and review of on-site financial accounting and bookkeeping system required to
assure the integrity and effective performance of COFI’s financial operations.
Responsibilities:
- Examine financial documents for completeness,
accuracy, and validity of financial data before making payments.
- Monitor disbursement of funds from the project
bank account(s) to ensure compliance with COFI’s financial policies and
procedures.
- Review sample of expense reports and other
project expenses on a regular basis to ensure adequate support
documentation, allowability, allocability and reasonability.
- Review of monthly financial reports other
financial reports and conduct bank reconciliations.
- Assist the General Manager to prepare
financial reports to donors
- Assist program managers to develop annual
operational budgets and review for accuracy, reasonability, completeness
and donor compliance.
- Develop proposal budgets for review by the
General Manager in accordance with donor requirements.
- Assist the General Manager in monitoring
program expenses by ensuring timely preparation of expenditure reports,
accruals and projections and burn rates on a monthly basis.
- Review existing internal control systems to
ensure financial integrity at all times; identify weaknesses and recommend
corrective actions as per the GAAPs and COFI’s financial procedures.
- Mentor and train the Finance staff in various
finance functions to build their competencies in these areas.
Required Qualifications:
- Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business
Administration
- Minimum CPA (K) or equivalent
- Minimum of four (4) years relevant experience
in finance or accounting at supervisory level.
- Additional years of relevant work experience
may be substituted for educational requirement
- Knowledge of USAID regulations is an added
advantage.
- Previous experience with nonprofit
organization will be an added advantage.
- Excellent financial and computer skills –
working knowledge of accounting software, database applications, word
processing and Excel.
- Demonstrated budgeting, budget monitoring and
financial reporting skills
