2 years Fixed Term contract

Based in Nairobi, Kenya

Who we are: Oxfam in Kenya implements a large and innovative programme that incorporates humanitarian responses as well as longer term development and policy work that delivers impact for some of the country’s most marginalised people.

Oxfam Kenya applies a one programme approach which means it has multiple activities that support a holistic approach to humanitarian, development and advocacy for long lasting change in poverty reduction.

Oxfam in Kenya works in the arid lands of the north, principally in Turkana, Dadaab and Wajir; in the Nairobi informal settlements and at national level advocacy and coordination in multi stakeholder forums.

Oxfam is increasingly developing its role as a facilitator or catalyst for change and it puts women at the heart of everything it does.  It is increasingly focused on building Kenyan institutions rather than directly implementing itself.

Oxfam in Kenya requires a highly experienced Land Rights Programme Coordinator to help successfully start up, implement and demonstrate delivery of the Land rights component in its country programme.

The Role: The Land Rights Programme Coordinator will focus on leading implementation of a new Community Land Rights Project funded by the UK Department for International Development and implemented in partnership with Namati.

The Project will apply innovative legal empowerment techniques to support select communities in Kenya to gain legal protection over their land and natural resources. During this process, the extent to which community land protection affects conflict and gender dynamics will be rigorously tested.

More broadly, the Land Rights programme Coordinator will be a member of Oxfam’s core management team in Kenya, ensuring programme design and management reflect current and potential challenges with respect to land reform and have a clear influencing agenda.

The Land Rights programme coordinator is expected to work closely and exert influence over all key actors in the land sector (impacted communities, private sector, government, civil society and donors) under the supervision of the Kenya National Programme Coordinator and Country Director.

Person Specification

To be successful in this role, you will require a  either a degree in Law or Development combined with considerable professional experience and success in influencing government policy relating to land reform and citizen’s engagement in Kenya’s socio-political context.

You must be committed to principles of social justice and community consent, be a self motivator whilst able to work with others in loosely connected teams of collaborators.
