The Center for Research in Environment Kenya (CREEK) is a social and environmental enterprise and specializes in research, training and capacity building for equitable management of natural resources and improved livelihoods. 

CREEK has worked with communities, government and other global development partners to eradicate poverty induced environmental degradation with a history rooted in participatory, sustainable and community driven projects. 

CREEK has recently received a funding from Act under the Changieni Rasilimali Facility to implement its activities in Tharaka Nithii County. 

To support the implementation of this programme and to achieve its objectives, CREEK Kenya seeks to recruit a motivated, hardworking and experienced individual to fill the following position on a short term engagement;

Job Title: Advocacy Officer  

1 Position
 
Reports To: Project Manager
 
Location: Chuka, with regular field travel
 
Duration:  Five (5) Months with a possibility of extension
 
Purpose of the Role: The main role will be to develop advocacy plan and ensure implementation of the capacity building activities, design and produce advocacy tools for adequate communication information learning and actions in the lifetime of the project.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee the advocacy work in the implementation of various activities in-line with the proposed activities.
  • Conduct community trainings on Natural resource governance, Climate Change and advocacy issues in the County.
  • Conduct workshops and campaigns to raise awareness of local community members and other Non-State Actors on matters of Climate Change and Natural Resource Management.
  • To conduct trainings and build capacity of community members and local leaders to proactively engage in decision making on matters of natural resource management and poverty.
  • To empower women through trainings on ways to reduce climate change induced poverty through Climate Resilient Entrepreneurship to reduce vulnerability.
  • Development of appropriate advocacy messages suitable to the different categories of stakeholders.
  • Support community mobilization and periodic reporting on the ongoing advocacy activities.
  • Incorporate gender perspectives and enhance gender participation in the capacity building and awareness campaigns and trainings.
  • Work in close Collaboration with other staff to ensure integration of advocacy support as an integral part of the overall project.
  • Linking with the County Government of Tharaka Nithii, NGOs and CBOs and other groups and communities in the process of capacity building.
  • Assisting monitoring through liaison with other field teams to assess the progress against the set targets and advise, give recommendation on progress as per proposed project timelines
  • Assist with other project activities as assigned by the Project Manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social sciences with strong background in advocacy
  • At least 1 year practical working experience in policy and advocacy, together with relevant professional experience in the rural communities.
  • Ability to work sensitively with a population and stakeholders of different interests without arising conflicts.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Swahili (written and oral) and Good knowledge of MS word/ Office.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team flexible and resilient to stress and ability to adapt to changing working environments
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking and planning skills and monitoring and evaluation skills/experience.
  • A good background understanding of Climate Change and Impacts, Adaptation and Mitigation is desired.
  • A good understanding of the National Policies and Frameworks regarding Climate Change Mitigation and Natural Resource Management is an added advantage.
  • Innovative, hardworking, team player and MUST be able to work independently.

Job Title: M and E Officer

1 Position
 
Reports To: Project Manager
 
Location: Chuka, with regular field travel
 
Duration: Five (5) Months with a possibility of extension
 
Purpose of the Role: Responsible for monitoring and ensuring high quality and timely inputs, and for ensuring that the project maintains its strategic vision and that its activities result in the achievement of its intended outputs in a cost effective and timely manner.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Will be in charge of the overall implementation of the M&E framework as designed for the project activities under the guidance of the PM.
  • Will support the designing of program M&E tools for data collection, verification, and management and reporting as well as data audits in the lifetime of the project.
  • With support of the PM, develop and implement a monitoring and evaluation strategy for the CREEK project activities.
  • Assist Project Manager to develop systematic and realistic monitoring plans that capture quantitative and qualitative data to report on project performance indicators.
  • Coordinate the designing and implementation of baseline survey, follow‐up on monitoring and evaluation exercises for various activities.
  • Monitor all project activities and document progress towards achieving project outputs and results.
  • Conduct quality checks on produced cook stoves and solar lanterns and ensure all relevant data are captured as predetermined.
  • Monitor adoption of project technologies like improved cook stoves and solar PVs and report the same.
  • Adhere to the monitoring and evaluation methods and principles and report writing techniques and requirements as determined by the board of directors.
  • Develop program and operational reporting templates that facilitate data capture and understanding
  • Monitor and evaluate overall progress on achievement of results as well as the sustainability of the project results;
  • Will also be providing suggestions and strategies to the Project Management for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of projects by identifying bottlenecks in completing project activities and developing plans to minimize or eliminate them;
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, with a demonstrated experience in Participatory Learning and Evaluation.
  • At least 1 year relevant experience in community based project monitoring and evaluation.
  • Prior experience in mobile data collection and monitoring of cook stove projects will be preferred.
  • MUST have a high proficiency in the use of computer
  • Strong training & facilitation and mobilization skills.
  • Ability to initiate and manage change and to recognize and adjust to rapidly changing conditions ;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills including ability to write reports;
  • High level interpersonal and cross-cultural skills including ability to build alliances and collaborative relationships with sensitivity to diversity.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of integrity; establish straightforward, productive relationships;
  • Must have strong quantitative and analytical skills, verbal skills and ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non‐technical colleagues.
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of monitoring in community natural resource base and cross cutting policies.
  • Assist with other project duties as assigned by the Project Manager.

Job Title: Project Manager 

1 Position
 
Reports To: Technical Director
 
Location: Chuka, with regular field travel
 
Duration:  Five (5) Months with a possibility of extension
 
Purpose of the Role: To manage the implementation, monitoring and reporting of the activities implemented by CREEK Kenya under the Changieni Rasilimali Facility.
 
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • To provide overall technical and operations leadership in implementation of the project activities.
  • To manage the project in accordance with project documents, work plans and budgets and ensure that work is consistent with CREEK’s proposed activities  and that the pre-award  conditions stipulated are adhered to.
  • To supervise other line project staff and provide technical and operational support with direct engagement in the project implementation on a daily basis.
  • To ensure adequate and responsive engagement with other stakeholders, including NGOs, County government, CBOs and communities to support project activities.
  • To keep abreast of relevant changes in government policy that could affect the project and advise senior management accordingly
  • To support the ongoing budgeting and implementing the work plan and ensure all the schedules are delivered in a timely manner.
  • To prepare and submit periodic project update reports in the standard format to the technical director.
  • In collaboration with the M&E Officer, to develop and implement a project monitoring and evaluation process, clearly documenting project outcomes/impact and lessons learned.
  • To provide leadership to all project staff and develop effective team work and individual staff skills relevant to the project.
  • To participate in regional programme meetings with other project officers, as requested by senior management
  • To undertake any other duty as may be directed by the line manager from time to time
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  • Higher education in Environmental Science/natural resource Management is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the development and policy environment in Kenya
  • Good understanding on concepts of resource management and resource conflicts and impacts of climate change on natural resources.
  • MUST have Knowledge & practical experience implementing natural resource management projects at the community level
  • Good understanding of the role of improved cook stoves and Solar PV technologies in resources management and sustainability.
  • Should have at least 2 years field based experience implementing similar projects at the community level

Job Title: Project Assistant 

2 Positions

Reports to: 
Project Manager
 
Location: Chuka, with regular field travel.
 
Duration: Five (5) Months with a possibility of extension

Purpose of the Role: The purpose of the role is to support the implementation of the project activities under the CRM Facility, the PAs will be in charge of supporting the activities of the project together with the M & E and Advocacy Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure adequate and timely support is provided for programme implementation, preparation of progress reports, annual work plans and activities
  • Compiles data from various sources for the purpose of complying with financial, legal and administrative requirements.
  • Responsible for document management, project monitoring, evaluation and reporting in support with the M & E Officer.
  • Conduct community and stakeholders mobilization during awareness campaigns and capacity building.
  • Supervise the undertakings of project activities; stove assembly distribution, and data collection.
  • Collection of field data as required to facilitate the process of monitoring
  • Liaison with local leaders and community organizations to lobby for project support and adoption of project activities.
  • Strengthen the organizations experience of working with target communities through grassroots community engagements.
  • Where necessary will support by undertaking the designated administrative duties.
  • Assist with the project activities as assigned by the Project Manager
Minimum Requirements
  • Diploma in Project Management/ Community Development
  • Two (2) years experience in community project management
  • Good computer  and Report writing skills
  • Good communication and mobilization skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and flexibility
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure.
