Database Administrator Job in Kenya

1. Job Summary: The Application developer will perform a variety of database administration and management assignments on both Microsoft and none Microsoft platforms.

This requires knowledge of established relational database management procedures and data processing knowledge. 

The job holder will be   expected to analyse and understand the business requirements, design and develop reporting tools/ solution (technically and functionally), manage large databases running applications across various businesses and to be fully responsible for data back-up and recovery.

2. Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Database & and Data warehouse management
  • Create test plans, test data sets and perform automated testing to ensure all components of the developed database systems meet specifications;
  • Participates, as needed, in coordination and implementation of projects. Including the design and configuration of databases for new projects or upgrades, as well as Testing new systems to ensure compatibility with business applications
  • Develops and maintains procedures for database configuration support
  • Interfaces directly with a wide variety of end users and technical counterparts in other business units

Database Performance Tuning/Management
  • Database Security Planning and Configuration
  • Back –up and recovery management
  • Works closely with the ICT Database Team Lead to coordinate the implementation and ongoing support of databases physically hosted at the Data centers or Disaster Recovery Center
  • Define and ensure integrity of the backups and restore processes in accordance with the disaster recovery policy.

Business Support
  • Provides On-call support (24×7) to assist with troubleshooting, escalation, or recovery of failing databases
  • Work directly with the IT support personnel and teams to resolve issues identified and escalated during daily operations;
  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring incidents , formalize test plans and implements troubleshooting procedures;
  • Provides support services to monitor, backup, and diagnose the Authority’s databases; recommends corrective action to database failures
  • Report and follow up on vendor problem resolution to ensure compliance to Service Level Agreements (SLA) and contracts.
  • Coordinates the training of end users on various system databases where necessary
  • Development of data warehouse(s)
  • Development of data warehouses and related business reports

Competences
  • Development of business intelligence tools
  • Good understanding of Software Development Life Cycle and Methodologies
  • Experience working with a Data Warehouse and/or relational databases is required. Knowledge in MS SQL, Oracle and MySQL is required.
  • Solid understanding of data modelling, extraction, transformation and batch load processing is required
  • Highly motivated and self-directed individual with the discipline to deliver within agreed timelines
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Database administration
  • Certified Database administrator in depth understanding of both Oracle and MS SQL databases
  • Basic hardware knowledge
  • Excellent PL/SQL Programming expertise, Experience as DBA on ORACLE 11g,
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
