DataBase Administrator
Job Responsibilities
- Establishing the needs of users and monitoring user access and security;
- Monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast responses to front-end users;
- Mapping out the conceptual design for a planned database;
- considering both back-end organization of data and front-end accessibility for end-users;
- Refining the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model;
- Installing and testing new versions of the DBMS;
- Maintaining data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act;
- Writing database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary
- Controlling access permissions and privileges;
- Developing, managing and testing back-up and recovery plans;
- Ensuring that storage and archiving procedures are functioning correctly;
- Working closely with IT project managers, database programmers and web developers
- Communicating regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security;
- Commissioning and installing new applications and customising existing applications in order to make them fit for purpose.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information technology, electrical engineering or related field from a recognized institution
- Thorough knowledge on SQL, RDBMS, object oriented and XML DBMS fundamentals
- Certification as an oracle DBA and certification as an oracle certified professional is mandatory
- At least 4 years’ experience in a multi-disciplined and busy IT environment in a medium to large scale organization with strong background in service delivery and operational support
- Practical and proven experience in Symantec NetBackup and Oracle storage systems
- Experience with integration and support of backup software
- Understanding of data management tools and techniques
- A good understanding of data base architecture, software and database management systems
- Ability to work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines as an appreciation of wider business demands
