Programme Project Executant Job in Kenya

WWF, the Global Conservation Organization, through its office in Kenya, is seeking to recruit key staff to work in the Mau Mara Serengeti (MMS) landscape.

The MMS Landscape is one of the four priority landscapes in WWF’s African Rift Lakes (ARL) Priority Place.

This trans-boundary landscape includes the world-famous Mara-Serengeti ecosystem and large parts of the Mau Forest Complex.

Landscape’s rich biodiversity also includes important populations of WWF flagship species such as the African Elephant and the Eastern Black Rhinoceros.

In order to address the increasing threats on this unique landscape, WWF has reinforced its long-standing support to this area by combining projects into one comprehensive landscape programme.

We therefore require the following staff to help manage this programme:

Job Title: Project Executant (PE) - HSBC Programme, Mara

Supervised By: Programme Manager

Mission: To ensure the implementation to the highest standards of HSBC programme objectives in line with the Mau Mara Serengeti Programme Framework and Ma Ma Se programme.

Major Functions / Job Objectives: The Project Executant (PE) will work on a full time basis under the direction of the Programme Manager towards effective and integrated conservation and management of the Mara River Basin, leading to the implementation of the components of the MMS programme framework.

The PE will specifically ensure that the following are carried out during the contract and project period:

Main Functions:
  • Take overall responsibility for the delivery of HSBC objectives;
  • In consultation with the Programme Manager, develop, implement and monitor annual workplans and budgets for the HSBC programme;
  • Work closely with Project Executant on Tanzania side and ensure cross learning and joint planning and delivery of given outputs/ outcomes;
  • Work closely with communities (WRUAs), Government ministries and Private sector and other key stakeholders to develop actions that will ensure participatory and sustainable management of land and water resources within the programme area;
  • 5. Prioritize the communities within the programme area, in an objective and participatory manner, for sustainable development and benefit sharing, including linking communities to other potential funding agencies, markets, line ministries and county governments;
  • Regularly report to HSBC on progress of the programme and participate on monthly skype calls;
  • Update the monitoring plan and prepare adequately for management purposes, communication and sharing and use of the outcomes;
  • Maintain/strengthen the institutional linkages already established with the private sector companies and other statutory institutions (KFS, Agriculture and provisional Administration, etc), and partners within the Ma Ma Se consortium to leverage on the added value of these partners for better environmental stewardship and enhanced community livelihoods;
  • Ensure linkages across relevant projects/programmes running at the Mara Basin to foster synergy and optimal value addition, while ensuring that HSBC’s objectives are achieved;
  • Communicate results and experiences of the programme, liaise with media and WWF communication department to produce materials and ensure that relevant private sector stakeholders are mobilized to involve in PES activities, as buyers or as partners in marketing, training, etc;
  • Participate in meetings, seminars, and conferences that are relevant to the Mara River Basin and HSBC work in and outside the country in order to represent WWF, share lessons learnt, promote WWF’s work and collect new ideas that can drive better conservation in the basin on especially HSBC objectives;
  • Adhere to WWF’s administrative and financial requirements regarding the coordination and implementation of these activities including preparation of progress and technical reports, budgets, draft contracts and partner/community agreements;
  • Review HSBC financial reports to ensure they are in line with budget lines and meet the required WWF and donor standards and are submitted timely to WWF Kenya for uploading in the Oacle system;
  • In close collaboration with Programme Manager, advice on approval/authorization of expenditures by staff related to HSBC as per WWF financial policy and procedure;
  • Supervise interns, and provide technical support to students that pursue knowledge of specific areas such as PES, community development, etc;

Others:
  • Provide advice on pertinent conservation issues in the area, search for lessons learned within the WWF network that are relevant to this project that could help improve the project implementation.
  • Participate in relevant conservation meetings and workshops in the area, develop papers, reports and presentations as necessary.
  • Undertake any other duties in support of WWF’s programme in Mara as may be requested by the Programme Manager Water and Land Intitiative, ARL programme manager, Conservation Manager and The Country Director

Qualifications:
  • Holder of a university degree in Natural Resource/Environmental Management, Biological Sciences or related field;
  • At least 3 years experience in a similar position;
  • Technical proficiency in conservation and integrated natural resource management.
  • Additionally, strong knowledge and working experience in water, climate, forests ecology, agriculture;
  • Strong communication skills (written/oral),good team leader/player with strong interpersonal skills;
  • Strong experience and skills on project monitoring and evaluation;
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili. Knowledge of local languages and cultures are added advantages;
