Program Description: Research Care and Training Program (RCTP) is collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of Washington (UW).

RCTP leads the Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) program, a comprehensive HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment program working in 140 clinics in Kisumu, Migori and Homabay Counties, Kenya.

We have vacancies for Mentor Mothers in the FACES Program:

Position: Mentor Mother

20 Positions

Reports to DCCLO, Coordinator, Mentor Mother Team Leader

Location Migori, Rongo, Nyatike, Suba, Mbita, Kisumu

Duration One Year

Position summary: Provide peer education and psychosocial support to pregnant women, mothers and their families; to prevent HIV transmission to babies; to promote maternal and infant health and to empower women to live positively with HIV.

A Mentor Mother provides these services by drawing on her personal experience as an HIV-positive woman, her training and guidance from her supervisors and the health care team.

Key Responsibilities and accountability:
  • Provide one on one peer education and psychosocial support to PMTCT clients and couples.
  • Co-facilitate support groups for PMTCT clients and couples.
  • Conduct defaulter tracing and home visits for priority PMTCT clients and those who cannot be reached by phone.
  • Facilitate group pre-test HIV education for pregnant women.
  • Co-facilitate support group health talks in facility waiting areas on key messages on PMTCT and MNCH.
  • Refer PMTCT, MNCH and CCC clients for other services within the health facility and to community based services.
  • Encourage partner involvement in MNCH services, education and psychosocial support.
  • Identify HIV positive clients from the ANC, PMTCT, PNC, PSC and at the Maternity.
  • Describe the intervention to the clients, screen for eligibility and get an informed consent as stipulated in the study protocol.
  • Use the SMS syntax or guide clients to create a text Message and enroll the client via SMS at the site.
  • Ensure safety and confidentiality of client information, records and study documents and mobile phones.
  • Prepare and present weekly reports during the weekly meetings.
  • Support client linkage from ANC, Maternity, Post Natal Clinic and the HIV exposed infants follow up

Requirements
  • HIV-positive mother
  • Lives within the local community of the facility catchment
  • Recent PMTCT experience (6 months - 2 years)
  • Has disclosed HIV status to at least one person within the household
  • Minimum of form four education


Position: Study Nurse

2 Positions

Reports to: Principal Investigator

Location: Kisumu and Migori

Duration: One Year Renewable

Position Summary: The study nurse will work under the direction of the study coordinator and consent study participants, administer study questionnaire, conduct study procedures such as blood draws and expressing breast milk, observing and recording conditions and status of study participants.

He/she will also offer counseling on nutrition and reproductive health matters, checking and administering drugs, and maintain study participants records.

He/she will also assist in recruitment of study clients as per the protocol, and prepare weekly and monthly reports on the progress of study activities.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Enrollment of study participants.
  • Administration of study questionnaire to participants
  • Conduct study procedures for example, blood draws and expressing breast milk.
  • Observing and recording conditions and status of study participants.
  • Offer counseling on nutrition and reproductive health matters.
  • Checking and administering drugs.
  • Maintaining study participants’ records.
  • Assist in recruitment of study participants as per the protocol.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly progress reports of study activities.
  • Closely work with other staff members to ensure the success of the project.
  • Ensures that quality data is collected

Requirements:
  • Minimum: Diploma in Nursing (KRCHN/KRN) with current registration with Nursing Officers Council of Kenya.
  • Knowledge of HIV prevention and treatment services
  • Nutritional training an added advantage
  • Previous work experience dealing with pregnant and lactating mothers
  • Experience working in a clinical research
  • Commitment to integrity and high quality performance
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in both English and Kiswahili. Knowledge of Dholuo an added advantage
  • Having GCP training and human subjects protection certification will be an added advantage
  • Must have good inter-personal skills and ability to work in a team
  • Must be keen and attentive to details and have ability to follow instructions and procedures properly
  • Currently residing or willing to relocate to the study sites


Position: Study Coordinator

1 Position

Reports to: Principal Investigator

Location: Rongo

Duration: One Year Renewable

Position Summary: The study coordinator will work on the study “Health consequences of food and nutrition insecurity during pregnancy and lactation” under the direction of the Principal Investigator Dr Maricianah Onono and will coordinate and minister research study associated activities.

He or she will be responsible for the smooth functioning of the research project on a daily basis, coordinate communication with staff and investigators, offer 70% clinical and 30% management time in research project, oversee nutritional activities and evaluation, organize, supervise and assess competency regularly for staff under her/him.

He/she will also act as a resource person on health related matters, prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports relating to the project and assist in preparation of project work plans and progress.

In addition, he/she will also ensure that recruitment and follow-up goals of the study are met and oversee study expenditures and budget.

Key responsibilities and Duties:
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of study design and goal and ensure that the study is conducted in compliance with study protocols and other regulatory requirements.
  • Plan and coordinate the initiation of research protocol, and the establishment of operating policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate communication with staff and study investigators.
  • Ensures the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of research and data collection activities.
  • Oversee nutritional activities and evaluation.
  • Supervise and assess competency regularly for staff
  • Act as a resource person on health related matters
  • Monitor study expenditures and budget
  • Monitor and report on enrolment progress
  • Maintain communication and collaboration with FACES and Ministry of Health for coordinated and amiable efforts
  • Respond to questions about the study posed by participants and study team
  • Consistently update the study principal investigator about the study progress
  • Ensure data quality and assurance
  • Attend to study participants

Requirements
  • Diploma in Nursing (KRCHN/KRN) with current registration with Nursing Officers Council of Kenya. Bachelors of Science in nursing degree is an added advantage.

Position: Study Nurse

1 Position

Reports to: Study Coordinator

Location: Migori

Duration: One Year Renewable

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Supports continuum of care within the PMTCT cascade
  • Through supportive supervision, ensures that HIV positive women identified at the ANC are linked to the Maternity and Postnatal registers.
  • Ensures adherence to the study protocol and procedures by the mentor mothers.
  • Supports provision of quality Antenatal care services with HIV testing.
  • Supports subject enrollment to ensure that informed consent is properly obtained and documented.
  • Supports the process of DBS sample collection through CMEs, On Job trainings to Nurses and peer educators.
  • Monitor DBS results Turn Around Time (TATs) and identify points of delay for prompt action.
  • Provide counseling and education to patients.
  • Assist the study sites with routine patient care and other tasks as needed and as time allows
  • Gives updates to the study team during weekly meetings
  • Supports the study coordinator in preparing monthly and quarterly reports.

Phone consults:
  • Custodian of the study hotline for patient consults.
  • Responds to ALL calls from study participants.
  • Documents and keeps records and forms of all phone consults.
  • Updates the call log data base.
  • Updates the study sites on the type of calls, concerns and advice given to participants

Data management:
  • Supports mentor mothers in data entry using the mobile phones.
  • Links HIV positive women between ANC, MAT, PNC.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives within the study sites to include Multi Disciplinary discussions (MDTs), Data Quality Audits.
  • Supports accurate documentation in the ANC, Maternity, Postnatal, HEI register, within study sites
  • Plans and coordinates random data quality audits in the study sites.

Requirements
  • Diploma in Nursing and Registered to practice with Nursing council of Kenya, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is an added advantage.
  • Strong leadership skills and must be a team player.
  • At least one year experience with the KEMRI-FACES program
  • Excellent computer skills and strong verbal and written communication
  • Flexible to work in any Sub County of FACES Program operations in case need arises.
