Farm Assistant – Poultry (Re-advertisement)

Location: Nasewa, Busia county, Kenya

Salary: KES 12,000/= per month

Description: We are a progressive family business growing combination crops & raring poultry.

The opportunity has arisen to appoint farm assistant in the poultry unit.

 The position requires someone with strong organisational qualities to assist in the day to day running of the unit.

Responsibilities:

1) Coordinate activities involved in raising poultry:
  • maintaining equipment and facilities on poultry farm, such as chicken houses, feeders and layer nests.
  • collecting and candling eggs
  • crating and shipping fryers
  • cleaning and fumigating chicken houses
  • ventilation management
  • monitoring and managing the feed and water consumption of birds
  • vaccinations
  • unloading of chicks
  • humane cull of birds
  • putting fresh litter down
  • preparing sheds, thoroughly washing down at end of each cycle

2) Record keeping:
  • completion of daily / weekly records - birds, meters, feed, etc.
  • preparing egg production, feed consumption and poultry mortality reports

3) Maintaining safe working practices:
  • ensuring that farm activities comply with government regulations and health and safety standards
  • ensuring that the correct veterinary and medicines treatment records are up to date.
  • protecting the environment and maintaining biodiversity

4) Ensuring welfare of livestock:
  • daily checks on well being and quality of birds
  • keeping an up-to-date knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them
  • understanding the implications of the weather and making contingency plans
  • monitoring and managing the birds environment and conditions

5) Production performance:
  • ensuring market orders are met fully and on time
  • monitoring performance of the poultry unit and production stages
  • making sure that work progresses satisfactorily

Qualifications:
  • Diploma or certificate in animal health/production
  • Previous experience in poultry farming an added advantage
