Road Safety Project Internship
Introduction
Handicap
International (HI) is an independent and impartial aid organisation working in
situation of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster.
We work
alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, taking action
and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their
living conditions and promote respect for their dignity.
Handicap
International intervenes in difficult circumstances in order to prevent
impairments and disabilities caused by disease, accidents or violence.
The
organisation also aims to ensure access for all to services in a range of
sectors.
Lastly, the
organisation works on capacity- building, promotes greater social participation
and encourages people to exercise their rights.
The Handicap
International network consists of eight national associations.
The French
association, set up in 1982, was joined in its fight to help the most
vulnerable people by Handicap International Belgium in 1986, followed by
Switzerland in 1996, Luxembourg in 1997, Germany in 1998, the UK in 1999,
Canada in 2003 and lastly the USA in 2006.
Following
the creation of the Federation in 2009, Handicap International adopted a new
global organization that aims to consolidate and increase its capacity to take
action in aid of the most vulnerable people in more than 60 countries.
Context Analysis
Kenya loses
over 3000 people to road carnage annually.
The Road
Safety project’s objective is to reduce the rate of accidents, injury and death
associated with road transport. HI intends to recruit a project intern to
support in the implementation of the specific project activities.
General Objective of the Internship
- To support the ongoing Traffic Police trainings in Naivasha and Thika under the Road Safety project.
Specific Objective of the Internship
- The internship is to contribute to specific project activities in Naivasha and Thika by providing logistical and operational support to various Road Safety processes for an initial three month period.
Responsibilities of the Intern
The intern
will work closely with and report directly to the Project Manager - Road Safety
project. He/she responsibilities will include:-
- Generating an organogram of specific functions for partner organizations in the road safety project
- Capturing success stories from the project and developing content presentable for distribution
- Following up on progress of assigned tasks.
- Assisting in logistical and operational support for various Road Safety led processes.
- Providing other assistance for the Road Safety Project as required.
- Expected Results of the Internship
- An organogram for partner organizations developed
- Success stories are disseminated
- The assigned project activities are implemented within the timeframe
Duration of Internship
- 3 (three) months renewable from 1st March, 2014
Requirements for the Intern
Education
- At least a Diploma or currently pursuing a Degree in Developmental Studies, Social Science, public health, transport or other relevant fields
Experience
- Practical experience in project work is preferable
- Experience working with civil servants is desirable
Attributes
- Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national and cultural backgrounds.
- Constructive attitude and ability to approach work with positive energy.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and can deliver on agreed timelines.
- Demonstrate high level of integrity.
Skills Required
- Strong organizational skills and fluency in English
- Ability to think and work logically and work precisely with attention to detail
- Ability to write clearly and concisely
- Excellent computer skills, with good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Good communication, interpersonal and analytical skills and team player.
Please note:
HI will pay
a daily meal and transport allowance of Kshs. 400/= for each day worked for the
duration of the internship
