Program Description: The Research Care and Training Program (RCTP), is collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of Washington (UW).

RCTP leads the Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) program, a comprehensive HIV prevention, care, and treatment program working in over 140 clinics in Nyanza Province, Kenya.

Due to its continued growth, the program is seeking a motivated, pro-active individual to fill the following vacancy in the Safer Conception Research Program (SCRP).

This research program develops, implements, and evaluates safer conception options for HIV-affected couples who desire children as well as provide training in the area of safer conception for healthcare providers.

Position: Research Assistant

Reports to: Study Principal Investigator (PI)

Location: Kisumu

Duration: 5 Months, beginning from 1st March 2014.

Position Objective: The Safer Conception Research Program (SCRP) represents a group of clinical and qualitative research studies that are intended to develop and evaluate safer conception options for HIV-affected couples in Kenya, specifically in the Nyanza region.

In addition, the SCRP will develop and evaluate the education and training of healthcare providers in safer conception education and counseling.

Successful conduct of the studies in the SCRP will be dependent on the thoroughness, accuracy, and precision of the collected data.

Accurate data collection is dependent upon the attention to detail and the ability to resolve anticipated and unanticipated logistical challenges.

Thus, the role of the Research Assistant is integral to the success of the SCRP and attaining the objectives of the ongoing studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Attain an in-depth understanding of the study design and objectives of the ongoing studies to assist in the successful implementation and conduct of each study
  • Provide logistical support to the other study staff on a daily basis in the field, including travel to the homes of study participants, as needed
  • Support recruitment and retention of study participants
  • Track all study participant data and enter into the study database
  • Communicate with local and international investigators at least twice weekly on the progress of the ongoing studies
  • Organize, facilitate and conduct the research program’s daily activities as it pertains to the ongoing studies
  • Data management (data collection, assessing accuracy of data, data quality assurance, and reconciliation of erroneous data, and review of medical records)
  • Coordinate and communicate with study staff (Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators, and FACES staff).
  • Assist investigators in management and administration of grant funds

Requirements:
  • Diploma level education or equivalent experience in Social Sciences and/or Community Development
  • Human subjects research certification
  • Clinical work in HIV/AIDS; experience working with patients who are HIV-infected and knowledgeable and sensitive about issues of privacy and disclosure. (Minimum of 2 years)
  • Data entry experience
  • Organizational skills and detail oriented
  • Independent judgment and resourcefulness
  • Understanding of the local community and its social and geographical landscape
  • Strong communication skills
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, 2010 (Word and Excel)
