Senior Accountant - Biovision Farmer Communication Programme (FCP) and Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT)

icipe - African Insect Science for Food and Health is an intergovernmental organisation funded by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has 400 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.
icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Senior Accountant in the Biovision Farmer Communication Programme (FCP) and Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT).

The position is tenable in Nairobi, Kenya at the icipe Duduville campus.

This is a two-year contract, with a possibility of extension after successfully completing a six-month probation period of the first contract.

Overall purpose of the job

To ensure the financial controllership and integrity of all Biovision FCP and Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) development partner-supported projects, and provide consolidated financial plans and reports for the projects as needed, within the requirements of different partners.

FCP Project related duties:

The Senior Accountant:
  • Performs project accounting and controlling;
  • Performs reconciliations of ledger for the donor financial statements;
  • Prepares monthly management accounts;
  • Interacts with stakeholders.

BvAT Project related duties:

The Senior Accountant:
  • Performs accounting (finance and cost accounting) and the respective tasks;
  • Performs yearend closing and related work;
  • Provides support for the budget/forecast phase;
  • Provides management reports on a regular basis (e.g. liquidity report, actuals vs budget) as well as ad hoc reports;
  • Prepares project reports as per donors’ requirements;
  • Develops and optimises procedures and structures;
  • Ensures compliance with internal and external regulations (and the respective support to internal and external stakeholders).

Knowledge required for performing the job
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Finance/Accounting principles;
  • Knowledge of system analysis and development of financial operating systems;
  • Prior knowledge and experience in usage of accounting software appropriate for international organisations, e.g. SUN Accounts, Vision Executive and Vision Excel;
  • Computer proficiency in word processing and spreadsheets software (MS Word and Excel).
  • Ability to set up new accounting system (implement new SW/accounting structure).

Requirements/Qualifications
  • Degree-level or higher in Accounting, Commerce or Finance from a recognised university.
  • Training in accounting (at least CPA, K) will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years working experience in a demanding environment or an international organisation, on general accounting ledger and financial reporting.
  • Ability to present complex issues clearly and concisely.
  • Knowledge of French will be an added advantage.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to plan and work with minimal supervision.

Reporting

This position reports to the FCP Coordinator/Project Accounts Manager.

The selected candidate should be available to start by 1st December 2013 or thereabouts.
