Summary:
Our client is a national membership based organization whose mission is to empower women in business to grow and excel.

It has established itself as a key player in women’s economic empowerment working to encourage women’s economic empowerment through advocacy, capacity development, and mentorship and creating market linkages.   

Job Objective:

The incumbent will lead the implementation of the advocacy campaign which runs up to December 2014.

In particular s/he will be responsible for delivering core advocacy strategies, identifying opportunities to shape the campaign and build relationships with key stakeholders.

The Policy and Advocacy Officer will be expected to undertake their work in a manner that is professional, friendly and flexible and be prepared, within reason, to undertake other areas of work, as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • To work closely with the Executive Director on implementing the advocacy campaign
  • To prepare accessible and succinct policy and advocacy statements, papers, submissions and reports.
  • To alert our client to potential opportunities to positively impact on and influence the development of the campaign
  • To help develop and disseminate policy positions
  • To promote the campaign through social media and other fora.
  • Develop funding proposals for the scale-up of the project
  • To be available to take part in and assist with media opportunities and to represent our client on the campaign when appropriate.
  • Organize the campaign launch, seminars, conferences, meetings and other events as and when required
  • Maintain accurate financial records and documents evidencing sub-grant program expenditures.
  • To maintain and build-on existing relationships with key stakeholders in the advocacy campaign
  • To respond in an efficient, friendly and appropriate manner to queries and communications to and within the office.
  • Steer monitoring and evaluation of the advocacy project and prepare reports to the project funder
  • Actively participate in team and staff meetings and reviews/ evaluations and to contribute to the development of the advocacy project as a whole
  • Participate in the efficient flow of information within the organisation by sharing and seeking information as appropriate.
  • Be committed to the purpose of the advocacy campaign and to work within the values, policies and procedures of the organisation.
  • Undertake any other duties assigned by the Executive Director.

Experience:
  • A bachelor's degree in political science, law, communications or a related social  science field  (Masters degree will be an added advantage)
  • At least 3 years experience in advocacy and preferably advocacy on issues of women’s economic empowerment
  • A good understanding of the discourse on women’s economic empowerment and market access in particular
  • Experience of influencing governments, parliamentarians and the media in order to bring about change in policy and practice
  • A good understanding of Kenyan political institutions and processes and how they link to KAWBO’s core issues
  • High level communication skills, including experience of communicating effectively across cultures and with diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Proven negotiation and influencing skills

Desirable requirements: Knowledge of the Kenyan public procurement framework
