Institutional Profile

Chuka University became the Ninth Public University in Kenya after it was granted a Charter by His Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki , the former President and Commander in-Chief of the Defence Forces of the Republic of Kenya on 8th January, 2013. 

The Main Campus of the University is located within Chuka Municipality in Meru South District, Eastern Kenya. It is situated approximately 186 km from Nairobi along the Nairobi-Meru Highway on the slopes of the snowcapped Mt. Kenya at an altitude of approximately 2,000 metres above sea level.

The University focus is to be a Centre of Excellence in Environmental and Renewable Energy Studies. It has a student population of over 9,000 taking courses ranging from certificate, diploma, bachelors, masters to doctoral studies in the following faculties: Education and Resources Development; Business Studies; Agriculture and Environmental Studies; Arts and Humanities; and Science, Engineering and Technology. 

The University’s phenomenal growth has witnessed the opening of three Campus Colleges - Embu in Embu County, Igembe in Meru County, and Chogoria in Tharaka- Nithi County. The University has a staff population of 400.

Elevation of the former University College to a full- fledged university will lead to rapid growth that will enhance national development as per vision 2030.

1. Deputy Vice-Chancellor

(Academic, Research & Student Affairs)

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research and Student Affairs) acting under the authority of the Vice-Chancellor will take charge of Academic, Research and Student Affairs Division with the following specific responsibilities and duties:-
  • Provide leadership in the management of the academic, research and extension activities of the University;
  • Promote learning, research, innovation and extension services in the university;
  • Oversee the development and implementation of academic programmes and regulations;
  • Co-ordinate all academic programmes in the University and ensure that modern technology in programme delivery is enhanced;
  • Coordinate research activities, student attachment and linkages with the industry;
  • Co-ordinate the management of examinations, postgraduate studies, undergraduate studies and development of the library;
  • Develop and implement intellectual property policy as well as oversee linkages and partnerships with other national and international institutions;
  • Plan and mobilize resources for teaching, innovation and extension services;
  • Co-ordinate all academic collaborations and linkages with other local/international partners initiating programmes in research, scholarships, student and staff exchange;
  • Co-ordinate implementation of appropriate quality assurance and mechanisms and ensure that university programmes conform to the national and international standards, as well as legally recognized professional bodies;
  • Co-ordination of student placement and welfare activities; and
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned or delegated by the Vice-Chancellor.
Qualifications

Applicants for this position must meet the following minimum qualifications:-
  • Be at least an Associate Professor with an earned Ph.D. from a recognized University;
  • Have at least ten (10) years of academic experience at a senior position in a University setting with a demonstrated capacity for leadership and academic excellence;
  • Have excellent understanding of the Kenya vision 2030;
  • Be registered with, and be an active member of professional associations in his/her profession;
  • Have the capacity to promote learning in competitive environment through commitment to academic excellence;
  • Have held senior administrative posts such as Deputy Principal of a Constituent University College, Principal of Campus, Dean/Director of a Faculty/School or leadership of comparable levels in a university or other institutions;
  • Possess an outstanding and internationally recognized scholarship record as evidenced by peer-refereed journal publications and university level books or book chapters;
  • Have ability and leadership skills to effectively co-ordinate teaching and research functions in the University;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of strategic planning in academic development of the University;
  • Demonstrated ability to attract research grants and other awards;
  • Be familiar with the national education laws and policies and current trends in higher education world-wide;
  • Have demonstrated competence in academic leadership in an academic/research environment;
  • Have skills, capacity and determination to initiate and facilitate the development of relevant and quality market driven academic programmes;
  • Have excellent analytical, problem solving, decision making, team building, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; and (xv) Be of the highest ethical standards , integrity and professionalism and comply with the requirements of chapter six (6) of the Constitution
2. Deputy Vice Chancellor 

(Administration, Finance, Planning & Development)

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration Finance Planning and Development) acting under the authority of the Vice-Chancellor will take charge of Administration, Finance, Planning and Development Division with the following specific responsibilities and duties:-
  • Provide innovative leadership and direction in the management of the University resources that include human, physical, financial and information resources;
  • Develop and implement policies and appropriate procedures to ensure efficient performance and delivery of service in the University;
  • Co-ordinate the preparation of statutory financial statements and management reports to planning and decision making;
  • Coordinate the design and implementation of appropriate human resource system which will attract, develop and retain competitive human resource capita;
  • Provide leadership in performance based management through performance contracting, appraisal and reward;
  • Advice the Vice-chancellor and the management board on the human resource, procurement, ICT and financial matters regarding the University;
  • Staff recruitment and training, promotion, discipline, central services, health services, security services among others.
  • Establish strategic linkages with government/ regulatory agencies and other local/international institutions; and
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned or delegated by the Vice-Chancellor.

  • Demonstrated ability to attract research grants and other awards;
  • Have a track record of successful change management;
  • Have demonstrable experience in networking, fundraising and resource mobilization in an academic/research institution;
  • Have excellent analytical, problem solving, decision making, team building, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Be familiar with the national education laws and policies and current trends in higher education world-wide; and
  • Be of the highest ethical standards , integrity and professionalism and comply with the requirements of chapter six (6) of the Constitution
Terms and conditions

Successful candidates will be offered a competitive remuneration package, including house allowance and other benefits in accordance with the Kenya Government public service guidelines.

The appointments will be for a contractual period of five (5) years renewable for a further period of five (5) years subject to satisfactory performance.
