Health Field Officer Job in Kenya

The ICRC’s Somalia Delegation in Nairobi implements the institution’s humanitarian activities in Somalia.

Health Field Officer (Detention)

This position is a full time position starting immediately.

The ICRC Somalia Delegation in Nairobi is seeking for an experienced and highly motivated person to fill the above mentioned position.

Job Profile:

The Health Field Officer (Detention) forms part of the team working under the supervision of the Health program coordinator for Somalia

The incumbent will be responsible to provide advice, as well as to support the Delegation’s strategies on diverse issues related to the implementation and monitoring of the health program in places of detention. 

These duties require an in-depth knowledge of the social, political and economic context of Somalia.

Responsibilities:
  • S/he will be based in Somalia and work within the frame of the health and protection department’s approaches and of the wider delegation strategy for Somalia; s/he will do regular reporting visit to the Delegation in Nairobi.
  • S/he will assist the Health Delegate in Detention in implementing and monitor the activities required for health in detention and will report upon the issues assigned by the Department.
  • S/he will implement specific projects according to the needs, in coordination with the other departments (e.g. response to an outbreak in prison in coordination with the water and habitat department).
  • S/he will translate working documents and interpret during dialogues or negotiations or meetings.
  • S/he will update the Health Delegate in Detention on any development regarding health in Somalia and situation of prisons.
  • S/he will contribute with collection and analysis of data gathered in the field.
  • S/he will contribute to the Delegation internal reporting.
  • S/he will respect and apply the security rules of the delegation and the confidentiality of his activities.
  • S/he might have to do other tasks linked to the protection or health department on request.
Minimum requirements:
  • Qualified nurse or medical doctor with a sound knowledge of the organization and functioning of an OPD, the management of outbreaks, the management of common diseases, and with a strong focus on implementing health programs in new areas.
  • At least 2 years of work experience in the medical field as OPD or PHC and a former experience with humanitarian organizations required.
  • Significant knowledge of public health assessment methodologies, including design, implementation, analysis and reporting.
  • Good computer skills (Word, Excel).
  • Significant knowledge in conducting trainings.
  • Fluent Somali speaker with excellent knowledge of English.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Good knowledge of geographically assigned environment.

  • Good organizational and analytical skills.
  • Good interpersonal, reporting and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel extensively in Somalia and to spend long periods in the field.
