Country Director Job in Nairobi Kenya


The Center for Victims of Torture is hiring a Country Director to provide leadership for CVT’s psychosocial program in Kenya, serving individuals who have suffered torture and war trauma. 

The Country Director is responsible for effective implementation and management of the program in a manner consistent with organizational values, policies and procedures, and commitment to program quality. 

The position has a one-year, renewable employment agreement. 

This may be an accompanied post. 

The position is based in Nairobi, Kenya.

We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. 

We provide direct care for those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. 

We are headquartered in Minnesota with offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Responsibilities:

Program Management:
Strategically direct program resources in order to achieve program goals. Manage program operations by coordinating activities with UN, humanitarian aid agencies and government ministries; and overseeing establishment and implementation of program assessments, objectives, activities and evaluations. Serve as primary liaison with headquarters.

Program Development: Represent CVT with donors, potential donors, international and national organizations, and other stakeholders. Develop funding proposals. Prepare and submit reports required by donors, CVT, and other stakeholders.

Financial Management: Monitor all financial aspects to ensure all CVT and donor-required policy controls are carried out. Prepare and submit forecast budgets and financial plans.

Staff Management: Develop a team of international, national, and refugee staff members who are committed to maintaining the values of the organization and achieving program objectives. Hire, train, supervise, manage the performance, and promote the development of team members. Model and implement best practices in staff well-being. Ensure compliance with all labor/employment laws.

Partner Relations and Community Building: Develop and maintain strategic relationships with community leaders and NGO partners in order to facilitate achievement of program goals.

Operations Management: Liaise with headquarters and ensure policies and plans are implemented. Ensure effective coordination of all logistics, including management of facilities, transportation, equipment, furniture, supplies and other acquisitions. Manage relationships with partners. Prepare and manage contracts with local vendors, including construction contractors.

Safety and Security Management: Implement security policies relevant to the country and the region. Monitor security situation on an ongoing basis and adjust practices to respond to evolving security risks.

Qualifications:
  • BA degree required in International Development or related field. Graduate degree preferred. 
  • Minimum 4 years experience in relevant management and supervisory experience in an international non-governmental organization.
  • Familiarity with mental health or psychosocial programs desired.
  • Familiarity with private, US government, UN and multi-lateral funders.
  • Experience with financial management of NGOs.
  • Demonstrated ability in donor proposal development, implementation, project monitoring, evaluation, and negotiating skills.
  • Experience working with program sites across the program lifecycle, including managing contractual relationships with local vendors.
  • Strong participatory leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills; strong computer skills.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage self-care, and to promote staff well-being.
  • Experience implementing effective security policies and procedures in unstable environments.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to travel to unpredictable, isolated environment, lacking in amenities.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Experience living and working in Horn of Africa desirable.
  • Familiarity with or interest in human rights.
