Risk and Compliance Manager

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out high quality, policy relevant research on population, health and education issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. 

The Center seeks to recruit a Risk and Compliance Manager.

The Risk and ComplianceManager willprovide direction and oversight over APHRC’s risk management and internal control compliance activities.

He/She will advise theorganization on potential risks and also monitor for compliance to the agreed action plans.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience on audit procedures in the NGO sectorto be able to appreciate and review development work. 

The job holder will carry out financial as well as performance audits and will team up with the M & E officer for some of the reviews.

Key Responsibilities

Advisory & Support
  • Planning, designing and implementing an overall risk management process for the organization
  • Periodically review the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework to guide the evaluation of risks for their vulnerability and impact
  • Coordinate the semi-annual review of the risk register. This will entail technical support to the risk champions from the various units in risk assessments and reviewing response plans from the various function/line managers.
  • Providing support, education and training to staff to build risk awareness within the organization
  • Coordinating periodic review of grants, partnership and consultancy contracts for the Center advising on key risks
  • Conducting due diligence audits/ reviews of proposed partner institutions
  • Risk reporting to management and staff and the board of directors
  • Coordinating the external audits Compliance
  • Internal Audit of different units within the organization to review compliance to procedures, processes and agreements
  • Make visits to partner institutions from time to time carrying out performance and financial audits
  • Initiates investigative procedures in case, there is a violation of procedures, policies, rules or regulations.
Qualifications and Experience
  • At least 5 years’ experience in internal audit with most of these being in not for profit organization. Candidates who have mainly been in external audit but have at least 2 years’ experience in internal audit may also be considered.
  • University degree and professional qualification in finance or audit e.g. CPA, ACCA, Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) etc.
