Announcement of Vacancy of
Chairperson

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the post of Chairperson of the Board of Kenya National Commission for UNESCO.
 
A. Background
 

This vacancy exists in the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO. 

The Kenya National Commission for UNESCO is a State Corporation in the Ministry of Education and deals in areas of UNESCO competence namely; Education, Natural Science, Social and Human Science, Culture, and Communication and Information.
 
The Chairperson of the Board of the Commission will be responsible for the overall management of the Commission in liaison with the Secretary General/Chief Executive Officer and will be answerable to the Cabinet Secretary and the Principal Secretary in charge of Education.

B. Requirements for Appointment
 
A person shall be qualified for appointment as Chairperson, if such a person:
 
(a) Is a Kenyan Citizen
 
(b) Holds at least a Masters degree from a recognised university in any of the following areas: Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture or Communication and Information
 
(c) Has at least ten (10) years experience in areas listed in (b) above
 
(d) Has proven experience of at least ten (10) years in UNESCO matters or international organizations or comparable experience
 
(e) Meets the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution
 
C. Duties and Responsibilities
 
(a) Provide overall leadership to the Board especially on areas of policy development;
 
(b) Maintain a close but independent working relationship with the Secretary General/Chief Executive Officer;
 
(c) Act as an informal link and provide a public relations role between the Board, management and the stakeholders of the corporation;
 
(d) Harness the collective skills of the Board and its Committees with those of the executive team ;
 
(e) Ensure timeliness and relevance of the information and material gains to the Board;
 
(f) Encourage Board members to participate fully in the deliberations of the Board;
 
(g) Head the Board’s evaluation process and generally demonstrate qualities of leadership;
 
(h) Conduct Board meetings efficiently;
 
(i) Avail oneself to the Board Members and the Secretary General/Chief Executive Officer;
 
(j) Guide the Board decision making process and chair meetings of shareholders.
 
D. Duration of Appointment
 
A term of four years and shall be eligible for re-appointment for one further and final term

In line with the existing Guidelines on Terms and Conditions of Service for State Corporations
