Reading (PRIMR) Initiative

The PRIMR initiative
is focused on curriculum support, teacher training and teaching material
development to improve the quality of early grade instruction in formal and
non-formal schools through a reading and math intervention.
The PRIMR initiative
in Kenya seeks to recruit a candidate for the position of Senior Education Specialist
The Senior Education Specialist will provide technical support for; the revision of lesson plans, teacher and student material development and other specified frameworks as funded by USAID/Kenya and agreed upon by the Ministry of Education.
This will include
working with RTI technical staff to identify, develop, and harmonize effective
literacy and numeracy instructional approaches to be used in the early grades.
The Senior
Education Specialist will supervise education officers for quality and
timeliness while providing support and technical inputs.
He/she will also
provide support for TAC tutors and instructional coaches working to implement
PRIMR programs.
The assignment is
technical, and is designed to provide high level support for effective local
capacity building as well as managerial to provide programmatic oversight.
This position requires candidates with a minimum of a M.Ed. with 9 years related experience or a B.Ed. degree and 12 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Applicants will also
demonstrate experience in the education sector and an understanding of
scientifically-based Reading and Math research; knowledge of a balanced
literacy framework and early Mathematics understanding; knowledge of Kiswahili
and English transition instruction strategies and familiarity with the policies
and procedures of the Ministry of Education, local school communities and an
interest in urban slum areas.
