We are looking to recruit dynamic, self driven individuals to fill the following two positions in our team

1. 
Health Coordinator - Kisumu

Position Description: The Millennium Villages Project is seeking to hire a qualified candidate to fill the position of Health Coordinator based in Sauri Kisumu, reporting to the Cluster Team Leader and technically to the regional Health systems advisor at the MDG centre in Nairobi.

The Health Coordinator will manage the health team to ensure that the appropriate health interventions are implemented at the village cluster level and that there is a collaboration and integration with other sectors such as infrastructure, education and communication.

The overall goal of the position is to work with the communities and empower them towards realizing health related MDGs.

Specific Terms of Reference:

a) Planning and Reporting
  • Work with MVP site Team Leader and MDG Health Systems Advisor to prepare annual health work plans and budgets
  • Implement approved annual health sector work plan
  • Periodically review the work plan in liaison with the team leader, and MDG Health Systems Advisor
  • Together with MDG centre health advisors, develop intervention models and adaptations of interventions based on results of health data.
  • Review and interpret quarterly indicators and data from the rapid SMS program with the cluster manager and the MDG centre’s health advisors
  • Collate sector reports and evidence-based trends derived from field data and disseminate this at both clinic and village level.
b) Staff Management
  • Co-ordinate activities of CHW manager, health enumerators and data entry technicians
  • Coordinate and supervise activities of health facilitators to ensure effective delivery of health interventions and health strategy in general
  • Implement performance appraisals for staff
  • Facilitate capacity building for clinic staff and Community Health Workers.
  • Provide direct on-the-ground logistics and problem solving support to village health sector including supply chain management, data management including electronic patient records and other forms of informatics such as rapid SMS.
c) Partnerships
  • Collaborate with Ministry of Health staff at district, facility and primary level to ensure effective and efficient delivery of health interventions.
  • Work with relevant partners and organizations in the health sector including the ministry of health to provide effective management of the health interventions. These health interventions include maternal and child health, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, NTDs, SRH, primary health care, as well as general health promotion.
  • Liaise with MVP site Team Leader and MDG Health Systems Advisor to prepare a strategy for government/MVP partnership on staffing secondment by government to MVP site
d) Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Prepare M&E frameworks, systems, tools, to monitor the operation of the health indicators.
  • Consolidate results, identify gaps and suggest corrective measures and propose timely corrective actions
  • Contribute to the program knowledge management efforts with technical briefings, and other reports, to record methods being used, identify good practices and share experience with others.
Required Qualification and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in health science, Master’s Degree preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Community Health and Development or experience in working with village level committees or community-based organizations (CBOs).
  • Experience in public health preferred - particularly on the clinical level and in health administration.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team.
  • Staff management and personnel skills.
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel.
  • Solid and demonstrable Project coordination experience.
  • Strong leadership and team building skills with a supportive management style.
  • Proven problem solving and organizational skills, flexibility and ability to work under pressure.
  • Experience in the health sector including familiarity with Ministry of Health procedures.
  • Fluency both in English and Kiswahili required.
2. Cooperatives Coordinator - Kisumu

Position Description: The Millennium Villages Project is seeking to hire a qualified candidate to fill the position of Cooperative/Enterprise

Coordinator based in Sauri Kisumu and reporting to the Cluster Team Leader and technically to the regional Cooperative Specialist at the MDG Centre in Nairobi.

Specific Terms of Reference:

a) Capacity Development:
  • Identify existing common interest groups and existing cooperatives across the Millennium Village site:
  • Carry out assessment of the status of the existing cooperatives across the Sauri MVP cluster and identify appropriate areas of intervention for capacity building, investment to ensure functioning cooperatives;
  • Working with MVP teams, develop organize, conduct and supervise training on cooperative formation, development and operations;
  • Provide timely technical advice and coordinate with the MVP business development unit, extension staff and farmer based groups for new ideas and cooperative business plans and execution of plans;
  • Build the different capacities of cooperatives on the site to perform and provide quality services;
  • Train common interest groups and cooperatives in basic financial bookkeeping, membership maintenance, service provision, business planning;
b) Strategic Alliances and Partnership:
  • Work closely with government organs responsible for cooperatives registering, capacity building and promotions etc.
  • Work closely with the Business Enterprise sector to identify partnerships with business partners, including financial institutions and prospective market links, to promote collaboration and provision of services which will benefit the cooperatives within the MVP site;
  • Ensuring farmer’s cooperatives effectively serve as primary market and terminal markets for outputs and inputs.
c) Technical Advice:
  • Provide technical and policy advice to cooperative groups in the MVP site by:
  • Providing technical back stopping to the cooperatives and common interest groups within the site
  • Assessing new and existing risks and provides recommendations to mitigate such risks.
  • Ensuring that cooperative businesses operate according to cooperative principles: voluntary and open membership, democratic member control, member economic participation; autonomy and independence, education, training and information and concern for community.
d) Monitoring & Evaluation:
  • Prepare M&E frameworks, systems, tools, to monitor the operation if the cooperatives.

  • Contribute to the program knowledge management efforts with technical briefings, and other reports, to record methods being used, identify good practices and share experience with others.
e) Networking/Partnership Management:
  • Develop, manage and maintain effective partnerships with local, district, regional and national government authorities responsible for cooperatives support;
  • Establish relations with government departments, Non-governmental organizations, Private sector, FBOs, donors and other stakeholders that are active in cooperative development in the Project area; seek opportunities to develop and improve on sustainable infrastructure and development of markets;
  • Develop, promote, and manage relationships with business partners, including with financial institutions to support the extension of credit to smallholder farmers;
  • Take part in the development of contracts and other agreements pertaining to cooperative development initiatives across the site.
Required Qualification and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and a master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • At least 10 years field working experience in community cooperatives (FBOs), microfinance, or related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and mobilize communities to implement development projects.
  • Demonstrated in-depth practical knowledge of inter-disciplinary development capacity.
  • Strong knowledge of cooperatives.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili. Knowledge of local language will be an added advantage.
  • Must have good interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  • Must be a team player

Both contracts are for an initial period of one year renewable subject to three months probation period, assessment of performance and availability of resources.
