Summary:

The Medical Officer's role is to develop and co-ordinate the implementation of clinical research in Reproductive health in KDH. Research training is embedded into the clinical fellowship post.

The Kemri-Wellcome Trust Programme at the Centre for Geographical Medicine Research-Coast (CGMRC) and Kilifi District Hospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology are jointly running research studies of maternal and perinatal health, centrally based in the maternity department at Kilifi District Hospital, but with studies also running in peripheral sites.

The study involves collection of clinical data and samples for all admissions and deliveries, and more detailed studies of infection and fetal growth on a proportion of mothers.

The study integrates with existing surveillance studies of paediatric disease and invasive infections in Kilifi. 

The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Programme is well known internationally for its work tackling malaria and other infectious diseases, particularly bacterial and viral childhood infections.

It conducts basic, epidemiological and clinical research in parallel, with results feeding directly into local and international health policy, and aims to expand the country's capacity to conduct multidisciplinary research that is strong, sustainable and internationally competitive.

Reporting Lines:

The post holder will report to the respective study PIs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the study, liasing with hospital obstetrician, clinical staff, nurses, field workers, laboratory staff, and IT services.
  • Supervise fieldworkers and other staff involved in the project.
  • Oversee nurse locums with and coordinate with the nursing supervisors
  • Quality control: Ensure high quality data collection through regular confirmation that each patient admitted has a complete record, fully entered onto the clinical database.
  • Assist in coordination of and training within the maternity unit for study staff, interns and nurses
  • Develop and follow standardised operating procedures (SOPs) for study procedures in maternity
  • Liaise with laboratory services to ensure  investigations are carried out for study and clinical care and results returned and entered on the database
  • Collaborate with the maternity department in the production and implementation of standardised definitions and clinical guidelines
  • Partake in an on call rota for the collection of research samples out of hours
  • Work with the KEMRI-MOH liaison officer to ensure the continued smooth running of the study.
  • Participate in the clinical care of patients, which may include on call duties.
  • Any other duties that may be required by the study or clinical team
Skills and Competence:

Essential Qualifications:
  • Degree in Medicine and Surgery
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board
  • Ability to lead and work within in a team.
  • Use of Windows, Microsoft Office software
Preferable:
  • Demonstrable interest and experience in maternal-perinatal health
  • Previous research experience in maternal or child health
  • Demonstrable excellent communication and supervisory skills
  • Demonstrable excellent organizational skills.
