Job Title: Broadcast Journalist (Multi Media), BBC Swahili Service

The BBC Swahili Service is part of BBC Africa. We broadcast to
around 20 million listeners in Eastern and Central Africa and have three daily
radio transmissions originating from London and Nairobi, with comprehensive
coverage of the regional and global agenda.

offers video, interactive and audio content
Expanded Department
Our output includes live news and current affairs, features,
discussion programmes, analysis, interactive and educational programmes whilst
our online production is moving to be 24/7, featuring a mix of text, images,
audio and video.
We aim to make international news relevant to an East African
audience, and bring international perspectives to bear on East African
developments.
We strive to report in a lively and engaging fashion, with
interactivity forming a large part of content across all platforms.
Role
Working in a multimedia team of journalists you’ll be
responsible for creating original material for all multimedia output, primarily
including radio bulletins, mobile phone bulletins and text stories with the
possibility of working on video reports.
You’ll offer ideas for items, programmes/series and will take an
active role in contributing to the editorial planning process.
A key aspect of this role is also performing live on audio or
video with or without a script, both live or in recording sessions.
Expanded Role
You’ll originate, research, prepare, produce and present items,
reports, packages, interviews, discussions, complete programmes, background
pieces, analysis and news features.
We need you to be able to freshen a story and also amend and
update material as required.
As well as reporting in audio, text and video from the field in
a range of formats, you’ll ensure that any output material for which you’re
responsible meets the standards required by the BBC.
Requirements
We need your outstanding command and up to date knowledge of
Swahili as first (or equivalent) language, as well as your complete
comprehension of written and spoken English.
You’ll have substantial recent and relevant full-time experience
as a journalist, both in originating material and editing the work of
others.
And will have the ability to write, adapt and translate with
accuracy and in the style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of
media.
Your good broadcasting voice and ability to communicate
effectively will mean you’ll also be able to acquire the appropriate
presentation style of the network.
Expanded Requirements
As well as experience of reporting, in the field, on
international and/or Swahili-speaking political and economic issues, you’ll be
able to demonstrate a good range of contacts for interview purposes.
In addition to your good computer skills, you’ll have extensive
knowledge of the internet and an understanding of the potential of new
technology. We need your thorough knowledge and understanding of news, current
affairs and the media situation in our target area as well as an in-depth
understanding of its history, politics, social issues and culture as well as
the changing needs of the audience.
