Vice President of Development and Operations

Summary of Position

The JA Africa VP is responsible for raising funds for regional programs and annual operating revenue for the Africa Regional Office by launching fundraising campaign concepts, researching fundraising prospects, writing proposals, and managing an effective stewardship process, including managing of donor databases.

He/she will liaise with board committees to ensure effective leveraging of their corporate networks and will also support JA Africa member nations (currently 18 countries) in strengthening their fundraising capabilities by providing them with fundraising leads and opportunities, and supporting their needs as they arise.

The VP is also responsible for developing strong communications tools and managing the media and marketing process for the regional office; Raising awareness about JA Africa by developing an effective communications strategy and materials around JA Africa regional events.

He/she also supports member nations in their communications and brand development strategy and works with Executive Directors to track and document key performance indicators for each member nation to ensure the consistency of JA Africa’s programs and message across the region. He/she will be expected to perform other related duties, as assigned or requested.

Fundraising (50%)

A. Regional Fundraising Campaign and Financial Management

  • Work with President to conceptualize and develop all fundraising materials and proposals for an effective campaign. 
  • Research and utilize regional board of director corporations, other corporations, foundations, and government donors in campaign. 
  • Develop leads and follow up on all assigned prospects. 
  • Write proposals.
  • Develop and manage an annual operating budget for the Regional Operating Center that is properly aligned to donor funding streams. 
  • Provide donors with the items promised and timely narrative and financial progress reports on their partnership with JA Africa.
Measures of Accomplishment
  • Quality of fundraising proposals written
  • Quantity & diversity of fundraising tools developed
  • # of contributors
  • # of repeat contributors/firm donor retention
  • $ value raised & ROC overhead budget goals met
  • Full financial transparency in budget development, spending and reporting

  • % of project targets met as indicator of return on investment to each donor
B. Support JA Africa Member Nations in fundraising
  • Develop tool kit of fundable projects to facilitate fundraising for JA Africa member nations (MN). 
  • Compile MN best practices in fundraising and share them with the network. 
  • Generate leads and fundraising opportunities. 
  • Help write and review MN proposals, answer their inquiries, and support them in recruiting effective development staff. 
  • Create an outreach strategy with funders to support MNs with pass-through funds.
Measures of Accomplishment
  • $ raised by the Africa ROC in pass-through funds for MNs
  • # of leads generated at MN level
  • Satisfaction of Member Nations
Marketing and Communications (40%)

A. Maintain External Communications
  • Work with President to develop and maintain high quality external communications including: the website, annual reports, quarterly newsletter, and other collateral materials.
  • Review/develop stories, interview subjects, insure high-quality photos, and manage the production process. 
  • Develop a database of marketing tools for distribution to the regional board, educators, current funders and potential contributors.
  • Build and maintain communication with other regions and JA Worldwide to ensure that relevant services are being provided to African member offices.

B. Develop communication tools
  • Build awareness of the organization and enhance its image by developing a communications strategy and materials around Africa events, which include: regional board meetings, competitions, and conferences; the launch of new countries and boards; the signing of partnership agreements.
  • Research and develop key messages and content for speeches, regional documentaries, and power point presentations.

  • Increased awareness of JA Africa programs across the sub continent
  • # of media appearances
C. Manage database
  • Ensure that information on contributors, prospects, partners, board members and other stakeholders are accurately documented and frequently updated.

  • Receipts & thank you’s processed on a timely basis
Performance Tracking and Documentation (10%)

A. Track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Work with Executive Directors and Director Research and Development to ensure that key performance indicators for each country (including student reach, volunteer service and local donor-giving information) are accurately tracked and documented
Measures of Accomplishment
  • Effective systems developed
  • Reach number are tracked consistently across each countries (actual numbers as well as student experiences)
  • All member nations trained and effectively using online reporting system
  • Data submitted on a timely basis by Member Nations and
  • Information on contributors entered on a timely basis
Qualifications 
(Education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities)

Required: 
  1. Masters degree in International Development, Public Relations or Marketing & Communications
  2. Impeccable written & oral communication skills
  3. At least 7 years of proven effectiveness in fundraising for an international development organization
  4. Ability to travel extensively (60%-70%)
  5. Experience in social entrepreneurship and youth economic empowerment
Desired: 
  1. JA leadership or equivalent experience with successful track record in all aspects of international NGO operations
  2. Fluent in at least one major African language
  3. Background in Human Resource Development
