Primary Math and Reading (PRIMR) Initiative

The PRIMR initiative is focused on curriculum support, teacher training and teaching material development to improve the quality of early grade instruction in formal and non-formal
schools through a reading and math intervention. 

The PRIMR initiative in Kenya seeks to recruit candidates for the positions of Education Specialist and Finance Manager.

Education Specialist

The Education Specialist will provide technical support for the development of lesson plans, teacher and student materials, plans and specified frameworks as funded by USAID/Kenya and agreed with by the Ministry of Education. 

These include working with RTI technical staff to identify, develop, and harmonize effective literacy and numeracy instructional approaches to be used in the early grades.

The Specialist will also provide support for TAC tutors and instructional coaches working to implement revised lesson plans. The assignment is technical, and ¡s designed to provide high level support for effective local capacity building.

This position requires candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and 6 years’ related experience or an
MA degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Applicants will also demonstrate an understanding of scientifically-based Reading and Math research; knowledge of a balanced literacy framework and early Mathematics understanding; knowledge of Kiswahili and English transition instruction strategies and familiarity with the policies and procedures of the Ministry of Education and local school communities.

Finance Manager

The Finance Manager (FM) will oversee the management of financial and reporting functions for the PRIMR program at the Nairobi office to ensure compliance with the terms of the agreement. 

S/he will ensure appropriate systems and procedures (cash management, vendor payments, budgeting and other related financial management duties) are in place to properly disburse, account, budget and report project funds which are cost effective, timely and have proper internal controls. S/he will provide supervision for PRIMR accountants.

Applicants will possess a minimum of a Bachelor degree plus six (6) years or a Master’s degree plus three (3) of experience in Finance or Accounting with CPA qualifications. 

Candidates will also have at least three (3) years of experience working for a USAID project. 

Candidates with demonstrated managerial experience are preferred. 

Knowledge and experience with QuickBooks is desired.
