The Proposed Umma University is sponsored by Africa Muslims Agency (AMA), an international organization operating in Kenya.

AMA was registered in Kenya in 1992 as a Non-Governmental organization, under the NGO Act.

AMA’s goals include the establishment, management and support of education related projects, such as the proposed university.

The precursor of the University, Thika College of Shariah and Islamic Studies (TCSIS) was registered by the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in 2001.

In 2007, its Diploma programmes in Islamic studies were validated by the Commission for Higher Education (CHE).

In 2008, the College was granted authority by CHE to collaborate with International University of Africa (IUA), Khartoum, Sudan in offering bachelors degree programmes in Islamic Studies.

With the University education experience from collaboration between IUA and TCSIS, the
idea to establish the proposed Umma University started in 2009.

In its portfolio of academic programmes, the University will initially have five faculties two of which are already in existence.

A dynamic and innovative team of individuals with the necessary experiences and vision to lead the proposed Umma University are required to fill the following key positions:

1. Vice Chancellor 

Vacancy No. VC 1/UU/2012

The Vice Chancellor’s position is the most senior position in the University administration. Overall, the Vice Chancellor provides strategic leadership, cultivates networking and strategic alliances with key stakeholders and partners and is responsible to the University Council
for the management of the institution.

The Vice Chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer of the university and has overall responsibility
for academic and administrative leadership. The Vice Chancellor is expected to develop educational frameworks and policies and take ownership of the first five years of the University’s Strategic Plan in order to achieve its set strategic goals.

Qualifications

  • Have an earned Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent degree.
  • Must have attained at least the rank of Associate Professor with at least ten (10) years experience in a Senior Academic and.
  • Have an outstanding internationally recognized record of scholarship and academic leadership as evidenced by extensive publications in scholarly, refereed journals! books.
  • Have a track record of successful University academic, administrative and financial management.
  • Have capacity to promote learning, research and community service in a competitive environment.
  • Have understanding of and commitment to academic excellence.
  • Be of high ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.
The successful applicant is expected to:
  • Provide leadership and direction in policy formulation and institutional planning;
  • Implement university development plans including human capital development;
  • Promote a good labor relations environment within the university;
  • Have oversight of student services, student welfare and academic support for students;
  • Advice Council on a range of key performance areas including the University strategy;
  • Have direct oversight of day-to-day operations of core education activities, resource management, quality assurance and compliance.
2. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic)

Vacancy No. DVC 2/UU/2012

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) is expected to be innovative and visionary individual with the ability to coordinate teaching/learning and research in the University as part of his/her responsibility.

The incumbent of this position is charged with the provision of academic leadership and the smooth running of academic programmes of the University.

Qualifications
  • Have an earned Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent degree.
  • Be a Professor/Associate Professor from a recognized university with at least seven (7) years experience in a Senior Academic and Management position.
  • Have an outstanding internationally recognized record of scholarship and academic leadership as evidenced by extensive publications in scholarly, refereed journals! books.
  • Have extensive knowledge and experience of university systems.
  • Have capacity to promote learning, research and community service in a competitive environment.
  • Have understanding of and commitment to academic excellence.
  • Be of high ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.
Duties and responsibilities:

Working under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor, the successful applicant is expected to:
  • Provide leadership in the management of Academic Affairs to enhance high academic standards.
  • Promote learning, research and innovation.
  • Oversee the preparation and implementation of academic programmes and regulations.
  • Coordinate all academic programmes.
  • Undertake any other duties as may be delegated by the Vice-Chancellor.
3. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance and Admin) 

Vacancy No. DVC 3/UU/2012

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance and Admin) working under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor has overall oversight and strategic leadership of the University for the successful delivery of diverse portfolios.

The incumbent implements policies, processes and systems to ensure quality, efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability in relation to physical, financial and people resources in each of the key portfolio areas.

Qualifications
  • Have an earned Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent degree.
  • Be a Professor/Associate Professor with at least seven (7) years experience in a Senior Academic and Management position.
  • Have an outstanding internationally recognized record of scholarship and academic leadership as evidenced by extensive publications in scholarly, refereed journals! books.
  • Have extensive knowledge and experience of university systems.
  • Have capacity to promote learning, research and community service in a competitive environment.
  • Have understanding of and commitment to academic excellence.
  • Be of high ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.
  • Have ability and leadership skills to effectively co-ordinate the Administration and Finance functions of the proposed Umma University.
  • Possesses proven capacity to promote teaching/learning, research and development in a modern university.
  • Possesses relevant knowledge on national laws and policies on education as well as financial planning and accounting.
  • Candidates who possess additional qualifications such as MBA, CPA or other relevant qualifications in administration, management and finance will have an added advantage.
The successful applicant is expected to:
  • Have the overall responsibility of direction, organization and management of the Administration and Finance section of the University.
  • Ensure that the University Management is promptly and properly advised to comply with all statutory and legal requirements that are currently operational.
  • Ensure effective accountability to the Vice Chancellor for the proper management of the University.
  • Prepare and implement the University’s budget estimates and operational budget.
  • Be responsible to the Vice Chancellor for the general conduct and discipline of the University staff.
General Terms and Conditions

The positions are appointed for an initial term not exceeding five (5) years and renewable for a further term not exceeding five (5) years depending on performance.

The posts carry competitive remuneration packages commensurate with qualifications and experience, which includes a basic salary, housing allowance, medical cover as per the University medical scheme, leave allowance, official transport and gratuity at the end of the contract.
