When I finally meet Prof Wangari Maathai, my first thought is that she looks smaller. She’s slighter than I expected, unlike the robust image that came through when the world saw her with Oprah Winfrey. And that engaging smile has become rare. 

It is now seven years since she won the Nobel Peace Prize, valued at Kshs 100 million at the time. It was a feat that made her something of a cliche – the prophet who is not celebrated at home yet elsewhere her work has made........
