Position Title: Communications Assistant

Organizational Unit: Sub Regional Emergency Office for Eastern and Central Africa
Duration: 6 months extendable

Type of contract: NPP
Duty Station: Nairobi

Anticipated start date: As Soon as Possible
Under the overall supervision of the Sub Regional Emergency Coordinator for Eastern and Central Africa and the direct supervision of the Communication and Reporting Consultant, the incumbent will, in particular, undertake the following activities:
Responsibilities of the role:
§  Assist with writing tasks including news stories, factsheets and web content.
§  Produce and format communication materials in Publisher, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Word and PowerPoint.
§  Liaise with Headquarter and country office focal points and project managers to secure information and images for communications materials.
§  Assist with the distribution of communications products.
§  Assist with media liaison to provide statements and arrange interviews.
§  Monitoring of media and internet coverage of the organization.
§  Assist with producing donor information packages and donor briefs.
§  Coordinate the preparation and submission of all regional project reports and quarterly reports. This includes liaising with countries included in regional projects for project information collection and consolidation.
§  Reporting to and performing other duties as required by the Communications Officer and the Regional Emergency Coordinator.
Academic Qualifications:
§  Bachelor’s degree in either communication/media/journalism preferred
Technical Competencies and Experience Requirements:
§  At least two years of relevant experience in implementing communications/public relations activities or working with media.
§  Applicants must be fluent in English and be able to write clearly and concisely in the language. (A writing test will be required). Knowledge of French is an advantage
§  Strong communication skills and an ability to work within a dynamic and collaborative team environment
§  Excellent organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail and deadlines
§  Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective media and communications materials that increase the visibility of an organization.
§  Computer literacy: Strong Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Publisher, Illustrator and InDesign an advantage.
§  Knowledge of FAO work in Emergency and Rehabilitation Assistance would be an advantage
