Kenya Red Cross Society is one of the largest humanitarian organisations in Kenya. Its vision is to be the most effective, trusted and self-sustaining humanitarian organisation in Kenya.

The Society will be undertaking the construction of several infrastructure in and around Dadaab in the next several months.

This will involve construction of buildings as well as fencing.

It is in this regard that the Society is looking for qualified persons to fill the following positions:

Position Title: Construction Supervisor

Reporting to: Head of Supply Chain

Job Location: Daadab

Overall Purpose

The holder of this position will provide support under the guidance of the Head of Supply Chain, with regard to construction projects in Dadaab. S/he will assist in coordination of construction efforts and will be responsible for safety and quality of work within the construction site under direct supervision of UNHCR Dadaab Office.

Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate is expected to provide daily supervision and technical guidance to the contractors carrying out the construction works line with the Government of Kenya and the Kenya Red Cross Society’ standards.

In consultation with the Head of Supply Chain proactively make recommendations and find solutions to technical problems that arise during construction works to ensure the works are completed on time and to adequate quality and standards.

Ensure that the contractor respects the contract documents including the Material Specifications, Bill of Quantities and Work Schedule and assist in the interpretation of ambiguous details.

Provide daily reports on the contractors’ activities to the Head of Supply Chain using agreed formats and ensure that all instructions to the contractor are adequately recorded in the Site Instruction Booklet and the Instruction sheet and filed with the Head of Supply Chain.

Organise Site meetings with the contractor and Kenya Red Cross technical personnel to iron out any relevant cross cutting issues.

Ensure that a folder is kept of all documents and drawings relating to the construction works and any changes in the construction design, BoQ of Specifications.

Verify contractors claims and recommend payments in accordance with the contract stipulations.

Ensure that contractor carries out basic site and staff practices to ensure the safety of their workers and the surrounding community members.

Ensure that the site is protected and will not present a danger to people working and living in the vicinity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture or Quantity Surveying.
  • Minimum 7 years professional experience and additional training/experience desirable in site supervision, management of building sites, design and construction of buildings.
  • Experience with the construction of prefabricated buildings is an added advantage.
Key Competencies
  • Knowledge of computer software (Ms Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project), and knowledge of construction drawing and design software (AutoCad or MS Vision).
  • Ability to think analytically and creatively for rapid solutions to challenges on site.
  • Ability to manage a construction project and assist in prioritising construction activities to ensure contractor completes on time and to agreed quality.
  • Proven ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and negotiation skills in a cross cultural environment and ability to communicate technical and non-technical details with Kenya Red Cross Society’s non-technical and Technical Contractor staff.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
Position Title: Clerk of Works 
(2 Positions)

Reporting to: Construction Supervisor

Job Location: Daadab

Overall Purpose

The holder of this position will support construction quality through inspection at the site, managing the contractor on the site and liaising with the client to ensure projects run on time, guided by the budget and to client satisfaction.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inspect work on site regularly and verify the quality of building materials.
  • Be on the look for quality and safety of construction site and confirm that the building plans are properly followed.
  • Identify defects and give remedial suggestions.
  • Monitor and report work progress to project managers and clients.
  • Supervising the workforce on building site during a project.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Holder of a degree/diploma in building and construction.
  • Clerk of works experience of at least 3 years.
  • Private Residential building experience.
  • Good time management, supervision and scheduling.
Key Competencies
  • Strong communication and presentation skills in both English and Kiswahili, including ability to develop reports.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, data-base, email and utilisation of the internet.
