Career Opportunities in Nuclear Energy Development

On behalf of the newly created Nuclear Electricity Project (NEP) - Ministry of Energy, The Kenya Power & Lighting Co. (KPLC) invites applications for the following vacancies:

1. Director, Technical Affairs 
(1 Post)

Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to Secretary of Nuclear Electricity Project Committee; the Director, Technical affairs will

  • supervise the Technical functions including Research and Electricity Development, planning and establishment of Nuclear Plant in Kenya, Facilitating and conducting Studies relating to Nuclear generation, develop collaborative programs with Universities and Research institutions with regard to Nuclear Energy, Developing human resource capacity for Nuclear generation in Kenya;
  • identifying suitable sites for nuclear energy facilities;
  • liaising with International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA), Developing policies and procedures on Security, Safety, Nuclear fuel procurement, Waste management and disposal of Nuclear materials.
Appointment Requirements:
  • A Masters degree in Electrical, Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Nuclear Engineering, basic /applied sciences or Environmental Sciences from recognised institutions Registration with relevant professional bodies will be an added advantage .
  • Training and experience in Nuclear Science is added advantage
  • At least ten (1 0) years experience, five (5) of which must have been at senior position in technical function in reputable institution
  • Leadership, communication and team building Skills
  • Sound and current knowledge of ICT
2. Director, Legal Affairs 
(1 Post)

Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to Secretary of Nuclear Electricity Project Committee; the Director, Legal Affairs will be the chief Legal advisor to the Nuclear committee, the holder will be responsible for
  • developing a comprehensive legal framework covering all aspects of Nuclear Safety, Security, Safeguards, liability and cooperation with institutions in relation to Nuclear Electricity generation;
  • Develop a comprehensive legal framework of an independent and competent nuclear energy regulatory body;
  • ensure compliance with international treaties and conventions related to peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Appointment Requirements:
  • A Masters degree in law from a recognised institution
  • An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya
  • Current advocates Practicing Certificate
  • Experience in Legal Research, Legislative drafting and policy formulation
  • At least ten (10) years relevant work experience
  • Leadership, communication and team building Skills
  • Sound and current knowledge of ICT
3. Director, Publicity and Advocacy 
(1 Post)

Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to Secretary of Nuclear Electricity Project Committee; the Director, Publicity and Advocacy will be in charge of Advocacy, Publicity and Public Education, the holder will be responsible for developing policies and strategies relating to Publicity, Advocacy and public education; Develop a Media Strategy for dissemination of information and funding of nuclear electricity; develop and maintain a system of storing information regarding nuclear electricity.

Appointment Requirements:-
  • A Bachelors degree in Communication or equivalent from a recognised institution
  • Excellent communication, (written, oral) and organisational skills:
  • At least ten (10) years relevant work experience, five (5) of which must have been in a senior position in advocacy, communications or journalism in public / private sector
  • Multilingual skills required. Excellent knowledge of French, German in addition to good command of Kiswahili will be an added advantage
  • Leadership and team building Skills
  • Sound and current knowledge of ICT
4. Manager, Human Resource and Administration 
(1 Post)

Reporting to Secretary of Nuclear Electricity Project Committee; the deputy Director Human Resource & Administration will
  • supervise Human Resource and Administration, Develop and implement HR policies in line with Government of Kenya laws and regulations;
  • Advising on appropriate organizational structure, business processes and best management practices to maximize organization effectiveness;
  • developing staff procurement plans that ensure availability of requisite numbers and competencies, planning and directing employee development, performance and career management programmes;
  • develop and implement reward and remuneration policies that attract, retain and motivate employees, provide administrative support services.
Appointment Requirements: 
  • Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences or equivalent from a recognised institution
  • Post graduate diploma in Human Resource Management from a recognised institution
  • At least ten (10) years experience, five (5) of which must have been in senior management position
  • Registered member of a recognised professional body
  • Good knowledge of government HRM procedures, Civil Services Code of Regulations and Public Officers Ethics Act Leadership, communication and team building Skills
  • Sound and current knowledge of ICT
5. Manager, Finance 
(1 Post)

Reporting to Secretary of Nuclear Project Committee; the Manager, Finance will be in charge of the financial affairs of the Nuclear Committee, prepare and monitor the Nuclear project budget, develop and implement financial systems for effective monitoring and reporting use of project funds, ensure compliance with public finance management, policies and procedures, respond to Audit queries, give financial reports to donors and other Nuclear Electricity stakeholders on the projects activities and expenditures.

Appointment Requirements:
  • A Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance from recognised institution
  • Qualified Accountant (CPA-K or it’s equivalent)
  • Registered member of ICPAK or recognised professional body
  • At least ten (10) years experience, five (5) of which must have been in senior management position in preparation of management accounting reports, maintaining accurate accounting records and control of budgets
  • Leadership, communication and team building Skills
  • Sound and current knowledge of ICT
Successful candidates will be offered competitive remuneration packages and other benefits on a contract of three years, renewable on mutual agreement.
