The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development.


ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, Vietnam) and East Asia (China).

The position:

The Project Development Manager (PDM) position would be part of the team developing, piloting, assessing the impact of, and scaling-up index-based livestock insurance (IBLI) products.

A comprehensive pilot has already been launched in Marsabit district of Northern Kenya and research into its implementation in Southern Ethiopia has already begun (see, www.ilri.org/ibli). The PDM will play a key role in managing the operations of the project team and the implementation of its agenda.

This includes facilitating effective engagement between the suite of public/private partners needed to successfully meet the project’s objectives. In addition, the PDM will support the project team by coordinating project-specific functions relating to budgets, reporting and administration. Finally, the PDM will oversee the development and implementation of the project’s communication and output dissemination strategy.

Specific Responsibilities

Partnerships

  • Engage and coordinate partners to ensure that the project implementation agenda is pursued in a timely and comprehensive manner
  • Liaise with stakeholders and partners to align expectations as necessary for project implementation success
  • Work closely with partners in the development of marketing and extension tools, and in the development of various documents needed for the insurance operations
  • Participate in the project steering committee
  • Develop and implement a strategy for identifying and engaging with key strategic partners for scaling up IBLI concepts and products.
Project Management
  • Harmonize all activities related to project development and implementation
  • Manage project funds
  • Coordinate project administrative functions
  • Prepare periodical project progress reports for donors
Communication
  • Develop a communication strategy to share IBLI results and experiences in partnership with other ILRI professionals and partner organizations.
  • Work with the partners to identify and develop appropriate dissemination strategies for IBLI.
  • Facilitating links with other communication functions at ILRI
  • Organizing/ coordinating project workshops/ conferences
  • Maintaining and updating the project website
Requirements
  1. Master’s degree (MPA, MBA, MSc.) and a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Economics, Business Administration, Management, Commerce)
  2. At least 4 years of relevant work experience respectively.
  3. Knowledge and/or experience with insurance, microinsurance or microfinance industries
  4. Demonstrable multi stakeholder/ partner relationship management skills and experience
  5. Excellent presentation and oral/written communication and skills
  6. Strong project and financial management skills
  7. Ability to conceptualize and initiate projects
  8. Creative and dynamic person who can operate both individually and as part of a team
Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 2-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Job level and salary: This position is job level 3A and starting salary is KES is 149,833 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.
