Background

The UN Somalia Mine Action Programme has been managed by the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) with implementation by UNOPS since early 2009. In south central Somalia, Somalia Mine Action will expand the activities in support of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) during 2010.

In complement to the provision of capacity building and support for the AMISOM forces to undertake EOD (Explosive Ordnance) activities in Mogadishu to reduce the large amounts of ERW (Explosive Remnants of War) and stockpiles throughout the city, EOD teams will be deployed in Mogadishu in concert with an emergency MRE initiative by UNMAS, UNICEF and UNHCR to reach the large numbers of returnees for provision of humanitarian assistance. UNSOMA has an office in Nairobi to provide managerial and support functions for the Regional Offices in Somalia.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the I T Officer and in consultation with the Programme Manager, the Information Technology Assistant shall work on the following deliverables.
  • Management, maintenance and monitoring of the continuous operation of critical components of the system servers – i.e. file, application, print and video conferencing equipment.
  • Operation and maintenance of the office Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) systems.
  • Installation of hardware, network connections and cables.
  • Troubleshooting of hardware/software problems
  • Proactive maintenance on telecom system to avoid disruption of service;
  • Performance of minor repairs on hardware equipment, as required;
  • Receipt, testing and installation of telecommunications hardware
  • Support on hardware familiarization and maintenance, software applications, file management/maintenance and LAN/WAN systems;
  • Assistance to users for LAN and Desktop access;
  • Support on standard software applications – i.e. MS Office, email, etc;
  • Receipt and Inspection of all hardware and software equipment purchased for the program in conjunction with the Logistics Assistant.
Academic Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in applied IT
  • At least 2 years experience in IT and database support
  • Ability to work independently, and to meet tight deadlines
  • Fluency in written/spoken English language
  • Ability to work in a gender-equal and multi-cultural environment
  • Experience within the UN system is essential
  • Fluency in English is essential
  • Proven ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines
