Save the Children UK Community Therapeutic Care (CTC) Nurse Job in Mandera Kenya

Save the Children UK in Kenya works in the North Eastern Province (Dadaab, Wajir and Mandera) with Programmes in Child Protection, Nutrition, Livelihoods and Health.

We are seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of
Community Therapeutic Care (CTC) Nurse in our Mandera Area Office.

This is an eight months fixed term contract.

Job Purpose
 

The job holder will ensure that every beneficiary receives adequate medical examination, the required routine and prescribed medication and referral for additional treatment, as appropriate and according to established protocols.

The incumbent will assist the Nutrition Officer & Nutrition Coordinator in supporting Ministry of Health staff to care for patients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Offer technical support to MOH staff in case management as required.
  • Ensure that every malnourished child receives routine medical examination.
  • Ensure that every beneficiary receives the routine medication including vitamin A, dewormers and measles immunization during distributions.
  • Ensure that any beneficiary requiring further medical assistance is referred in accordance with protocols.
  • Record all symptoms of beneficiaries and medication given and complete the child’s card at every visit.
  • Keep an up to date record of all medication used and illness treated.
  • Responsible for stock management and reporting (distribution monitoring, use of non expired drugs, stock ordering etc).
  • Ensure that local customs relating to privacy are adhered to.
  • Handle the beneficiaries in a sensitive and reassuring manner.
  • Ensure that the sites are left in a clean manner and that waste (medical and non medical) is appropriately disposed off.
  • Ensure that all equipment is in good working order and cleaned, ready for the next distribution.
  • Report any problems or broken equipment to the Nutrition Officer immediately
  • Prepare any necessary reports as requested by the Nutrition Officer
  • Ensure that mothers respect basic hygiene principles.
  • Responsible for ensuring water availability for hands / body and clothes washing.
  • Ensure secure storage for medication and food and proper record keeping
  • Ensure caretakers receive basic health education in feeding, hygiene and health.
  • Assist the Nutrition Officer in supporting MoH staff to care for the severely malnourished as required.
Person Specification:
  • Diploma in Nursing and registered as Kenyan Registered Nurse.
  • At least two (2) years work experience in community/primary health care and nutrition.
  • Conversant with the use of agreed protocols for a health information system, registering births, immunizations, deaths, arranging transfers from field to hospital, etc.
  • Familiar with CTC approach to management of acute malnutrition and more so protocols for management as recommended by the Kenya ministry of health.
  • Experience of and commitment to utilizing participatory approaches
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathise with all beneficiaries and their carers
  • Demonstrable ability at record keeping and report writing
  • Prepared to live and work in an uncertain security environment; flexibility & adaptability
  • Ability and willingness to frequently travel and stay in the field
  • Fluent in written and spoken English & Kiswahili
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles.
  • Sound computer application skills (Ms Word and Excel).
Desirable
  • Experience of emergency nutrition work and the design and implementation of feeding programmes (ideally CTC), including monitoring and evaluation
  • Proven report writing skills
  • Knowledge of local language e.g. Somali language is an added advantage
