Introduction
The Interim Coordinating Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources Government are in the process of supporting the implementation of high conservation impact projects in part as a response strategy to mitigating effects of climate through carbon sequestration efforts.
With recent developments in rehabilitating deforested and degraded lands of Mau Forest Complex, conservation, management and protection efforts in the Aberdares ecosystem, greening the cities and protecting the riparian reserves, it is envisaged that additional climate change benefits could generate carbon revenues for the country.
In order to tap into existing carbon markets and to be able to utilize carbon resources, it is imperative to develop and implement attractive carbon projects. It is in this context that the government of Kenya is exploring potential opportunities that will enhance effective participation in emerging carbon markets.
The preparation of the three PINs and three PDDs for the Mau, Aberdares, Greening the cities and Riparian Reserves’ projects will kick start the process of active engagement in the carbon business and realizing achievement of climate change benefits.
