1. Overview of TechnoServe and Young Women in Enterprise:
TechnoServe is a US-based international non-profit economic development organization working
in Africa and Latin America. Registered in Kenya in 1973, TechnoServe provides business solutions
to poverty by supporting small and medium enterprises, working with farmers to access markets
and promoting entrepreneurship.
TechnoServe is implementing a three-year program in two slums of Nairobi (Kawangware and
Mathare). Young Women in Enterprise (YWE) program is funded by the Nike Foundation.
The program seeks to raise the level of entrepreneurial activity among young women in Kenya;
particularly the most disadvantaged, to catalyze the start up of employment-generating, women-
owned small enterprises.
The program is working to provide young women aged 14 to 24 years
(both in and out-of school) with support, skills, and experience needed to transform ideas into
successful enterprises.
2. Monitoring and Evaluation:
The program has a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system that guides tracking of
implementation progress, performance and results. The framework uses the pre-post evaluation
methodology. In this regard, collection and analysis of data from beneficiaries shall be done
before, during and after the project implementation. To provide benchmark information, baseline
data for girls intending to join the program will be collected in January and February. Individual
and household level characteristics will be collected from girls using semi-structured
questionnaires.
A. M&E Officers (two positions)
TechnoServe is seeking to recruit two (2) competent M&E Officers (three and half month period)
to support its M&E team in carrying out the baseline survey.
i.Scope of work:
Reporting to the M&E Manager, each consultant will be assigned in either of the two sites working
with and supervising a team of enumerators to collect data from a sample of about 150 girls.
ii.Key tasks will include:
•Training of enumerators
•Oversee data collection by enumerators
•Data input, analysis and report writing
•Ensuring quality and accurate data is collected from the targeted girls
•Support data entry and ensure data is accurately and correctly entered
•Clean, analyze and interpret data
•Prepare and submit baseline report
i
ii.Key deliverables:
a) A brief report (3-5 pages) outlining key findings
b) A full baseline report with an executive summary, introduction, methodology, findings,
recommendations and conclusions
iv.Duration of contract:
The consultants shall be engaged for a period of up to three and a half months.
v.Requirements
Successful consultants should meet the following minimum requirements:
•Academic background in Social Sciences preferably Economics, Sociology, Development
Studies, Community Development or Gender & Development. Masters degree is desirable
•Experience in economic empowerment/livelihood programs and gender issues
•Experience working in slum areas strongly desired
•Experience working with girls and/or young women or youth
•Experience in using both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
methods/tools
•Experience in participatory project M&E
•Demonstrable analytical and report writing skills
•Proficiency in use of computers, especially latest MS Office packages and a MUST in the use
of SPSS for data analysis.
B. Enumerators
TechnoServe is seeking to recruit several competent enumerators to carry out field data collection.
i.Scope of work:
With supervision from the Consultant M&E Officer, the enumerator will collect baseline data
through administration of survey questionnaires to individual girls.
ii.Key tasks will include:
•Actual field data collection through questionnaire administration
•Ensuring quality and accurate data is collected from the targeted girls
iii.Duration of contract:
The enumerators shall be engaged for a period of two months.
iv.Requirements
Successful candidates should meet the following minimum requirements:
•Relevant degree preferably in social science – Economics, Sociology, Development Studies,
Community Development or Gender & Development
•Experience in administering questionnaires
•Experience working with the youth
•Experience working in slum areas a plus
•Demonstrable analytical and accurate data capture skills
•Proficiency in use of computers, especially latest MS Office packages
