Director of the Institute of Research

Becoming a research-led university is a major element of KIU’s strategic focus. It is in this spirit that a separate Institute of Research has been established.

Whereas the research mandate of the School of Post Graduate Studies and Research is restricted to overseeing studentship research at post-graduate level, the Institute of Research is the unit through which KIU will engage with the outside scholarly community and industry to generate knowledge for innovation through research.

The Institute is charged with championing the development and implementation of a comprehensive research agenda for the University.

Job Description for the Director of the Institute of Research
  • The Director shall report to the Senior DVC Admin. and Finance
  • The Director provides leadership, assumes a major strategic and policy role and will be responsible for the planning, management and evaluation of the university’s research agenda.
  • Provides leadership and vision for all research projects, including development of short- and long-term research plans, deliverables, work plans and timelines
  • Advise university management on the attraction, appointment and retention of competitive academic staff
  • Ensures research projects fully adhere to the mission and strategic plan of the university
  • Executes research protocols so that the investigations generate timely, reliable, and valid data that will yield meaningful contributions to knowledge or technology suitable for publication of original full-length articles in refereed journals
  • Identifies and applies for grants, including directing grant writing
  • Judiciously manages fiscal resources for research activities
  • Initiates and maintains research project collaborations and strong professional relationships with researchers, policymakers and industry
  • Leads the dissemination of research knowledge to industry and other stakeholders
  • Publishes peer-reviewed manuscripts annually
Director of the Institute of Strategy and Competitiveness

In a bid to institutionalize a culture of strategic thinking and strategic management, KIU has established the Institute of Strategy and Competitiveness.

The Institute will have a peculiar positioning in the University as it doubles as an administrative and academic unit. Its academic role is to design and deliver academic programmes in the area of Strategic Management and Competitiveness.

These will especially be executive programmes. On the other hand, its administrative function is to foster a culture of innovations and continuous improvement quality of teaching and learning in KIU.

The Institute will therefore champion a market-responsive (community-oriented) approach to planning and management in all the aspects of services delivered by KIU. A major part of this will be to spearhead the integration of an industrial placement component for students in all academic programmes offered at KIU, as well as ensuring a well-functioning job placement/ job creation programme for KIU graduates.

The university considers this to be a critical component of strategic marketing and competitiveness.

Job Description for the Director of the Institute of Strategy and Competitiveness
  • To champion the strategic direction of the University, particularly in respect of its role as a major provider of high quality learning, teaching, research.
  • To work with the Deans and Heads of Department in introducing new initiatives relating to curriculum development and delivery.
  • To be a champion for the development of innovative methods of learning and teaching such that the pedagogic strengths of academic staff are enhanced through organizing training and on-going mentoring initiatives for staff .
  • To influence the role of the University in the regional educational, economic and cultural environment through personal advocacy.
  • Responsible for planning and implementing an innovative marketing strategy for identifying a diverse groups of potential employers and for developing and maintaining a database as well as a web-based program for students.
  • Conduct and/or monitor and properly document individual and group training sessions and regular department meetings to ensure expected performance and growth standards.
  • Work in collaboration with faculties/schools for the purposes of externship/internship and job placement of graduates.
  • Organize job fairs on campus, attend outside job fairs, invite employers to speak in classrooms, and arrange on-campus interviews.
  • Ensure that each student meets one-on-one with Career Services personnel to determine job interests.
  • Maintain and update Career Services bulletin boards and stopping stations.
  • Use computer system to maintain accurate graduate and alumni database.
  • Continuously survey graduates and employers to ensure that programs meet or exceed current job market and employer needs. Recommend changes to current programs and ideas for new programs to the university Management Team
  • To perform any other duties as may be directed by the relevant authority.
